This pd event is appealing to me because it seems like it will have lot of active conversations between educators, so there will be many good ideas I can incorporate into my planning. This resulted in me filming an asynchronous lesson and trying to find ways to include collaboration and discussion despite all students viewing the lesson at separate times. Although this task seemed daunting, especially with art lessons for primary school students, I was able to overcome this challenge by discussing online technology platforms that could be used with my cohort members. I did a lot of my own research and anticipated problems and questions that my students may have when they access these platforms. All in all, the lesson was a success and I was able to use the DrawChat website to get students to collaborate (thanks to a recommendation from cohort member Pauline) and the Mentimeter website to facilitate discussions online (again thanks to cohort member Mick for including this platform in one of his lessons I observed for peer review). The network of other teachers in this program have been such a good resource for helping me build a professional learning community. Looking back at my own days as a student, my teachers and professors were always dressed as if it was yearbook picture day. And yet, I look around at my current teaching colleagues and half the time, they look like college freshmen at a 7:30 am class.

I understand that a formal or even semi-formal dress code may be seen as "boring" by some, but I actually enjoy looking the part. I look down on my colleagues when they show up in tank tops, shorts, and flip flops for a teaching day.

There is a line of thinking that students should view their teachers as approachable, and therefore teachers should look and act casually. I disagree. There are ways of being approachable without becoming a living embodiment of the "how do you do, fellow kids?" meme. I am Asian-American and work with local Chinese teachers and foreign Asian teachers who teach English. I look like them and am often perceived to be the same, but, as the article says, the parents perceive us to have different levels of "capital". On the legal side, we are perceived completely differently.
