My name is Joy. Growing up, I didn't plan on becoming a teacher. I was, however, keen to observe the more effective ones. I appreciated their impact and their influence in my life. The more I observed these exceptional teachers, the more I realize I want to be one. I especially want my own children to benefit from these types of teachers. Coming from an engineering background, I switched to pursue a teaching career. I bring with me a strong technical knowledge of math and science that I believe many children will benefit from. Armed with sound teaching pedagogy to match my knowledge expertise, I'm invigorated to make an impact to the next generation.

I graduated with a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. I completed the masters coursework for the program on Water Resources in the same university. I have worked as an engineer mostly in the field of infrastructure development planning for eight years before I relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. Having just started a family, I hesitated pursuing the same career in the US. My priority is to raise my children to values and beliefs I hold dearly. Entering the teaching field gave me and my husband that opportunity to raise our children, be on top of their education, and still pursue a satisfying profession. I am now halfway through finishing the post-baccalaureate program for Elementary Education. I am in my fifth year as a classroom teacher, three years of which is teaching math and science at the primary level in BASIS Phoenix Central.

After finishing the Elementary Ed courses on Phonics and Reading, I am now more convinced about the importance of reading and literacy for children at the primary level to be successful in math and science.

Why is reading important?
1. Comprehension of math and science word problems is the beginning of understanding problem solution.
2. Communicating solutions to math and science problems is an essential skill to process one's understanding of concepts.
3. Extending students' knowledge in math and science to other subjects, to solve real life problems, and to understand the world around us are proofs of a deep appreciation of learning.
