AGAPE is a Charter school for teen moms, and it was the first Charter school I have ever been actually! I learned a lot from the girls, and couldn't believe their maturity and their levels of motivation. So many of them had college plans and also college courses under their belt!

This semester I did something I have never done before and I have thought about and been a bit worried about even! Its working with ESL students!! I learned how to help them find words and learn about specific american grammar while teaching them math. For students with different language backgrounds, its a huge problem trying to keep up with the other students. I had opportunities in English classes and in math classes to help individual students go over projects and also learn what the lecture in math was trying to teach them. Shannon, the teacher was really good about it too, she is a great teacher!

Crazy Semester!!

Its been a crazy semester, and I unfortunately ended up missing some time service learning. I broke both of my elbows! The girls at AGAPE were funny about it and teased me though and Shannon has been really flexible with my crazy schedule! The girls started to open up to me more after that though, because I think they realized I am just like them and I can take jokes. I am not just a teacher, I am their bud, and I do not mind if they tease me for tripping over my shoelaces and breaking bones because that told me that they were comfortable around me and that is the whole goal with any student! It was probably the best part about falling! hahaha!

I love being an American Studies Major and one of the reasons I love this is because I can incorporate education into so many of my studies! I am graduating in December (WOOHOO) so this semester I have been working on a bibliography and abstract for my Senior Thesis project. You can bet I incorporated education! You can check it out here!

Inspiring Educators

I have been inspired by two women a lot this semester in education! One of those women being Shannon Voeks, the math teacher at AGAPE. She is so caring for her students, and their babies! She consistently has snacks for everyone if they are hungry, and even gives granola bars to the babies. Her drawer of food is like a magnet to those kids! They swarm around after the bell rings and she always seems so happy to be giving. She is so warm and the class is really comfortable. I feel like the girls really trust her, and she is so good about learning so much about them. Shes a super teacher! I feel like she is on my team with my education as well and she has taught me so much about the importance of being a friend to students, especially students that are mature and working so hard already.
Karla of course was another person who helped me this semester. She has always been so supportive of me and she's been flexible about some of the issues I have had this semester, but also has taught me a lot about how race works in the education system. I really appreciated her over the years, because she makes class so fun and everyone feel comfortable with themselves!
I have a new goal as a teacher, and it is to be a teacher like that, someone to take care of you and someone on your team. I want to be someone my students to count on and I hope I can maintain the consistent kindness that Shannon and Karla have shown me.

Embracing Diversity!

The uncomfortable topic of race and embracing all types of diversity is something we learned a lot about this semester. It is really important for me to bring up this tough to talk about topic. I can't just be colorblind I have to be aware and honest and thoughtful about questions regarding racism and thoughtful about being anti racist. I have to learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable and after this course I am so ready to do that in practice! Here is a TedTalk that Kiah included that I found really helpful in thinking about this.

SO WHAT?

I need to make it a priority over my entire life to understand race and keep that active in my mind. As a white person, I should be making a conscious effort to keep my head in that mindset. I also want to learn how to be a consistent and caring educator. My problem is consistency, and I worry that I am not going to be the same teacher every day as an educator. I really need to learn about myself more, and I want to read books about this! Also, I would love to get more experience with ESL students. Maybe over the summer I could help teach English!

Personally, the semester was hectic. I was lucky enough to have teachers that were understanding enough to be so flexible and kind. I have felt like I learned a lot from those teachers, now that I have circumstances that they had to accommodate, I am beginning to learn what actually helps the most! I also learned that I really enjoy working with ESL students and I feel like I am getting kind of good at it! Over all I had a good semester, and I felt like I connected with my students. I feel also prepared to talk about race with my students. I feel that I am knowledgeable enough, although I will never actually understand what it actually like to be a student of color.

This summer I want to read books about how to be more consistent in life. That is a quality that I really want to have as a Educator. I also am going to hang out at AGAPE until there semester is over. I am short on hours, plus I like being there especially during break! Woo! I have one more semester than a semester off before I hopefully head off to grad school! I want to be a substitute teacher during that gap. I learned at the final EDHD class that substitute teaching can be really great! I hope I can learn more about ESL students while I keep working on on my thesis! I am bummed to be done with EDHD courses, but I am excited to be continuing my journey to teaching
