Student Centered Approach
We started a new module on 1/8/2023 called Student-Centered Approach. We were introduced to our new teacher M. Stam who was not with us throughout the module we became acquainted with M. Miran in the last two lessons. Our session began with the introduction of the students
one by one. The teacher then explained what the module would be about, the type of tasks we would be doing and the learning outcomes of the course. At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher
asked each student questions how to introduce ourselves and how to talk about ourselves which difference from degree and level of education. Each of classmate talked about their hobbies, others talked about their upbringing with education and responsibilities, but I talk about my personal life as a mother who wants to raise my children in best way, overall, it was a good start to introduce ourselves differently. After a good discussion, what we discussed was, what is modern pedagogy? In my opinion, modern pedagogy is the art of teaching, that is, any of us can do it in different ways. Then, the teacher talked about the history of the student center approach, with each philosopher having a different perspective. Finally, M. Stam explained the characteristics of the student-centered approach which include building an environment in the classroom where everyone works as a group. With students needing to have an opinion and a voice and be part of the learning process we need to build trust with students, as well as give students the opportunity to evaluate their activities. The most important thing I learned was that knowledge is not imparted, but knowledge is created and built together with the learner, through different teaching materials aimed at buiulding vital skills called 21st century skills.

In the next lesson we discussed the major differences between teacher- centered and student-centered pedagogies. Focus on the following areas, which we did in the form of a presentation. We worked in groups on the following topics:
1. How are students, teachers and their roles viewed
2. How is knowledge viewed with the two approaches?
3. What is teaching aimed at?
4. What is the dominant teaching method?
5. How are students assessed?
6. What classroom setting is preferred?

Each group presented thier comments. Overall, the seminars were useful and we learned a lot of new information. After listening to each presentation, I learned that the new system (student-centered approach) is more effective because it focuses on students, which is considered the most important part. Changing between these two systems and moving
from the old system to the new system is difficult because it is a threat to teachers, especially experienced teachers, but the benefits of the student center outweigh the obstacles. In general, student-centered approach seems to be better but, in my opinion to achieve great learning systems
and learning environments where both teachers and students have important and influential roles
in the process, we can combine student centered & teacher centered and creating a balance between
both

Finally, M.Stam briefly explained the difference between teacher center and student center, these were the points:
Teacher Center is:
1. Low level of student participation
2. Students are viewed as lacking
knowledge and experience
3.Students are passive receivers of
content or knowledge
4.Teachers are viewed as the only
source and distributors of knowledge
5. Teachers assume most responsibility
6. Teaching is content and exam
oriented
7. Lecturing is the dominant
pedagogical tool
8. Students are evaluated based their
ability to reproduce the content they
receive
9. Competition rather than cooperation
is encouraged.

Student Center is
1. Student participation is high
2. Students are viewed as having equal
ability as teachers for learning
3. Students are active paricipants and
contributors of the learning process
4. Teachers are seen as facilitators and
guides
5. Teachers share learning
responsibilities with students
6. Teaching is learner and learning
oriented
7. Different innovative pedagogical tools
are used, e.g. problem and project-based learning
8. Students are assessed based on what
they can do
9. Students are encouraged to cooperate
and collaborate

In next lesson, the teacher gave us some more questions about What are the necessary conditions for SCL?, What are the challenges and disadvantages of shifting to SCL? Why teachers and students resist learner-centered?, What are
teachers’ roles when it comes to a challenging application of
SCL? and What are the practical steps towards the implementation of SCA?
We had another presentation about student center approach in education, each group discussed these topics. We didn't use any Data show or slides in this presentation. We just prepared posters, which was a new experience I learned that I can teach without using Data show and PowerPoint.

In next lesson, with M. Miran, another thing that was very interesting to me about this module was that we did a psychology test that have relation with scientific of the mind and behavior, in which we answered 120 questions. As a result, we got several types of intelligent. My result was kinesthetic, but in general my friends had several other results such as (musical, naturalist, logical, interpersonal, kinesthetic, intrapersonal, linguistic, visual). M. Miran separated us on the basis of each intelligent and those
who shared our intelligent became one group. We formed 6 groups out of 35 learners. After much discussion among ourselves, a representative of each group answered three questions: (Which teaching method should the teacher use? How should he assess? What should be the type of
assignments?) What I learned in this section is how important it is for teachers to pay attention to the hidden aspects of students and not to assess students in general as in the traditional way.

Learning Theories

Another important aspect was that all groups gave us a presentation about different learning
theories with M.Miran
• Behaviourist theory B. F. Skinner; This theory showed me that relies on punishment and
reward, this theory is mostly used in educational institutions. But since it creates a negative
impact on students so I disagree with the negative reinforcement that relies on punishment.
• Cognitivism theory by Piaget; He taught me that everyone must rely on their own abilities
and thinking to learn because according to this theory, learning is a process that occurs in
the brain.
• Constructivism theory of Piaget and Vygotsky; taught me that working as a group and
collaboration can achieve great goals with the help of a mentor’s guidance. Constructivist
theory is related to experiential theory, both of which focus on learning by doing and
experiencing.
• Experiential learning by Kolb; This theory was very interesting to me because it was
learning by doing. I think you learn well by practicing anything. Experiential theory that
focuses on transforming experience creates knowledge. I agree with this theory because
experiencing things on your own can be extremely helpful by learning new things.
• Connectivism theory by George Siemens; This theory, I don’t think is so effective in our
country due to lack of electricity, lack of internet connection, and some students can’t
afford to buy internet cards every month. However, the use of different digital tools is still
important because it makes our way easier, especially in research. Also, social networks
are very important to connect people around the world.
• Critical theory by Paulo Freire; which is an important theory because the student feels his
or her own existence, here the teacher and the student are equal. Communication between students and teachers is very important to better understand student problems and give them the opportunity to express their ideas and everyone should have a voice. What caught my attention here is that teachers should not act like a bank to give information to students and then want to take it all away from them in the exam. Finally, all of these things have shown me that we need to figure out what kinds of skills help activate our brains. I also understood that there are diverse ways of learning. One should be looking for the best way to learn, because there are different types of theories that have different purposes and applications. The best way for me is always to integrate between theories and learning process
and test which parts are effective and which are not because that will make the learning process more effective due to different types, personalities, knowledge and understanding levels of students. I would like to thank both teachers (M. Stam & M. Miran) for their loyalty and care. They taught me the most and completely changed my mind about the learning process.
