Different political parties were popping up: Free Soil Party, Northern Democrats and anti-slavery Whig party came together and formed the Republican party. The party grew and was ready to challenge older parties. </div>]]></description>

He opposed slavery but at this time was not willing to end it, because he wanted to keep the country together. The Democratic party was split on their views. The Northern Democrats had Stephen Douglass while the Southern Democrats ran John C. Breckenridge.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Because the Democrats split on the issue of slavery, they ran 2 candidates in this election. This meant that the vote was split down the middle, with each candidate getting less. Meanwhile, the Republicans were still together so Abraham Lincoln was able to get a majority of the votes.</div>]]></description>
