Thoreau is describing how he came to live in a house that he built for himself. First, he explains how he bought a house from a man named James Collins. After he moved in, he began to make his own changes to the house, but later realized that it would be more worth while to build his own house. He makes a list of things he needs and begins to financially plan for his house. He grows crops and sells them to make money for the materials he needs and with his discipline, he determined that he was doing better than any farmer in his area.

Thoreau starts off by talking about his love of rainstorms and a magnificent mark left by a lightning bolt on a pine tree. Many tell Thoreau that he must be lonely living in the woods alone. To Thoreau we are all lonely, living thousands of miles away from other inhabitants in the Milky Way. For him, being around other people does not stop loneliness.

He talks about the path that his footprints made from his door to the lake and how the ground is so easily conformed by the feet of men. He says that his reason for leaving Walden Pond is the same for going there. He has other lives to live and changes to experience. He wonders why Americans are always in such a hurry to succeed.

Quotes:
"I had not lived there a week before my feet wore a path from my door to the pond side" (Thoreau 227);
"Perhaps it seemed to me that I had several more lives to live, and could not spar any more time for that one" (Thoreau 227).

Facts/ Details:
4.

1. These passages show how Thoreau wanted to live a simple life and be close to nature. He wanted to build his own house because he thought it was the most worth-while way to spend is time.
2. Thoreau is demonstrating how a man can provide for himself from nature. He builds his own house, and his income comes from the plants he grows himself.
3. I like how when Thoreau wants something he goes and gets it. He found all of the materials he needed and made his house.
4. Thoreau has a good work ethic which is shown when he builds his own house and collects his own materials, for the most part, all on his own.

1. I personally do not think living the "simplest" life you can is the best idea. I think that you can have extra things in your life and still be happy.
2. I cannot imagine living outside of society with little to no contact around everyone else. I think even if I was surrounded by nature, I would still need to be around people to not feel alone.
3. Even though we are only a small part in our universe, I still think that socializing and being around people is a good thing.
4. I think finding a hobby, like Thoreau found the been field is important. Its important to put time and energy into something that you care about. I think the bean field shows that Thoreau was a really hard working man because of his attention to detail and the amount of time he put in.
