What I know about architecture as a fine art?

Prior to my learnings in our Fine Arts class, my knowledge about Architecture was not so much in depth. All I knew before was that Architecture is the art of designing buildings with consideration of its feasibility and structure. While also taking into account the mathematical equations and very meticulous measurements for every structure to be built. Like for business, it contributes to the branding of various companies, since there are certain types of Architecture in buildings and structures that come off as a trademark given their distinct appearances. Aside from Architecture being a provider of blueprints or guide to engineers or carpenters, it can also be a form of visual art where the aesthetics are important.

What I learned on architecture after the module?

After a few Fine Arts sessions, where we tackled into depth what lies underneath the word "Architecture," I discovered that there was more to such than just aesthetic structures. First, the true meaning behind “Fine Art.” Before, I thought every artwork I see whether it be in an exhibit or museum was considered beautiful, but then it was clarified by Roger Scruton that it is possible that not all artworks we see are beautiful nor considered as a fine art because according to him although beauty may be considered subjective it still has to be seen in an objective perspective. Second, form follows function. Every unique form of a structure or building we see just doesn’t serve the single purpose of looking aesthetic in our eyes because the structure should have purpose or a function to begin with and how the form complements function. Third, I also learned about the presence of different principles such as the Columns, Entablature, Post and Lintel, Cantilever, etc. and how we must take into consideration the several factors such as the relevance of the space, elements, and representations. Lastly, most forms have cultural, political, and historical relevance because just like the Eiffel Tower it was built to serve a purpose of commemorating the French revolution. To be clear, these are just a portion of what I have learned from our Architecture module. Given that architecture portrays complexity, I still have a lot to learn about it and I would be happy to do so because now that I have more knowledge about architecture I can now look and analyze buildings and structures in a more complex manner.

Given that we only discussed about Architecture several times, I'd like to know how famous architects conceptualize their ideas and turn those into actual projects starting from the sketching of the blue prints because they seem very complicated to sketch and plan out especially if the structure of what the architect wants it similar to the detailed structure of the La Sagrada Familia. Aside from wanting to learn how the blue prints and maps are made, I would like to also know how greatly the previous periods in architecture affected or affects our current period given the constant modernization of ideas and concepts happening and how they still manage to integrate a hint of classical designs to the modern day age structures.

The Expansion, created by an American artist named Paige Bradley, is a Bronze sculpture of a woman meditating in lotus position with cracks found in her body revealing her inner light. According to Gilson, one could be considered as a fine art if it is pleasing to the eyes, if it shows proportionality, representation, technique, and etc. However, its beauty does not only reside in the technical aspect of a fine art, but it also deals with the message and meaning, which makes its beauty more appreciative. The artist wants to remind us through this sculpture that we are more than our enclosed bodies. We should not be afraid to show the beauty within us because our physicality is just the surface of our beauty and just like books, the story has more to offer than just a pretty cover. We all have our own inner light emanating within us that's just waiting to be exposed only if we allow it to be and for me that's what makes this piece exceptionally beautiful - the message it exhibits.

Source:
Bradley, P.
