Nurses must demonstrate the ability to listen with empathy and respond with a calm and warm manor to people of all ages.

“Nurse managers should work to establish a supportive, encouraging environment that respects the dignity of both patient and nurses” (Rouse & Al-Maqbali, 2014, p.200).
Nurse managers encourage staff to communicate with each other and to address and confront teammates as needed. Strategies to improve communication are open and honest discussions, finding more time to communicate, listening, gaining and giving feedback, addressing rumors quickly, taking responsibility for the communication on the unit, and taking opportunities to praise staff.
Nursing managers are responsible for using open communicating when giving information to the staff nurses.

Effective communication in hospital units affects the delivery of care, the length of stay, the number of medical errors, and patient satisfaction (Marx, 2014).
Effective communication travels from one level to another through the hierarchical structure. In order for this to go correctly the operational and nurse manager must be on the unit and communicate to the nursing staff.
Personal feedback is the conclusion of the communication cycle and is vital to improve productivity and performance (Wagner, 2016). Effective communication is a key characteristic of the nursing career.

An effective aspect of communication is being open, this has been found to allow staff and adjacent coworkers to freely speak without being judged or ridiculed. Effective communication is crucial in a team consisting of managers of different levels and staff working on the unit as well. The collaboration between everyone is what can lead to an effective team function. The nursing staff should stay open minded and work with management on any changes. As long as the staff nurses adheres to any changes and speaks up if they have an issues, they are doing their part of the communication. The nurse manager is in control of effective communication and leads the team to success.
