What is technology? Technology is the knowledge of techniques, processes and the like or it can be embedded in machines, computers, devices and factories which can be operated by individuals without detailed knowledge of working of such things. Technology influences us in new risks as well as improvements to our lives. In our generation today, advancement in technology has a leading help in our society, in schools, medical fields, in workplaces and many more. Students prefer technologies because they believe that it makes learners more interesting and fun especially the use of mobile phones, loptops and tablets. But can we say that all of the impacts of technology to us and to our society are all just positive? According to the TED talk of Ms. Sherrie Turkle entitled Connected, but Alone? she talks about how she feels about technology. The main idea of Turkle's TED talk was that we, as an individual or as a group, are letting technology control us that does not supposed to be, it takes us away to communicate to other people physically. It minimize us to socialized with other people. We are focusing in online medias instead of public friends. I agree to what Turkle's said that we need to have a self-awareness on how and when we used technology properly. We need to balanced it so we can maintain our relationship to others. Some of the arguments that Turkle's said that other people using mobile phones or technologies when there are in meetings, conferences, and other important matters. They are not focusing on the important matter that they are belong. They are just checking, scrolling etc. And another example is in a family gatherings, eating breakfast, lunch or in dinner, other family using gadgets while they are eating instead of asking there children, how was their day, but no because they are busy holding a gadget.
Ms. Turkle expresses the idea of what is called the "Goldilocks Effect", meaning that people want to remain not too close but not to far away from other people either. She also said that the reason behind why we expect more from technology is that technology is always there for them when we are at our most vulnerable stages, when we are alone, when we have problems etc. So as Turkle's said, she believe that one of the most important things that we need to do is to learn how to be alone, which is I agreed. This is because if we do not know how to be alone, we are just going to make ourselves more lonely by attaching ourselves into technology and moving away from reality.
