This lesson has students read an excerpt from Fredrick Douglass' auotbiography. Students will largely have an idea about the horrors of slavery but through reading this they can see that many times slaves were agents of their own change and empowered themselves. Before reading students could write about some of the ways that they don't feel entirely free to do as they wish. Instead we are reminded about how those that come from impoverished areas or areas that are not "academically elite", can struggle once they are pursuing education. One way that teachers can use this as a resource in their class is by having students write about a time that they were somewhere but felt that they did not belong. An example could be just making the baseball team then realizing you don't know any of the warm ups, drills, or other customs. After students read each others anonymous posts they can relate to each other's situations and then watch this video.
