Bringing Awe and Wonder Back to Early Childhood:

One way to bring wonder and awe to FECC is to create play spaces that enhance children's imagination and curiosity This can be done by incorporating more opportunities for children to explore loos parts such as beads, shells, large tubes, logs, sticks, string, and tinker items for children to explore in their classrooms and outdoors. Incorporating loose parts into a child's daily explorations enhances curiosity, individuality, leadership and wonder in children. We have a section in our classroom that is dedicated to loose parts exploration. The children are always creating new and interesting creations such as zen gardens with colored rocks and gems, binoculars made for tubes, and habitats for animals made with cut tree logs. Turkessa Joo Room 8

In our classroom and in FECC we have created open spaces, spaces where children feel comfortable to explore or as the video called it to tinker. We have a loose parts area to be used as children see fit. Sometimes the shells are at a sea shore, other times they are used as ingredients for soup, they may also be used in the trains or cars. We have magnetic parts that can be used for cars or trucks etc.. We have real dishes, real cans and jars of food. Pet dishes and food etc.. It is an extension of their home. The art area is well supplied and open for interpenetration. Boxes become jack in the boxes with the children being the pop up character, the boat in gym becomes the bridge used to enact the story of The Billy Goats , we have had weddings etc.. You just need to open your mind add natural items and allow the children the opportunity to use their minds.
Penny Room 11

One of the ways I tired to bring awe and wonder to my classroom this year was to add books in the block area and art area on architect. A lot of my kids this year are so into building, creating and learning about different building. When I brought the books in and displayed them in the classroom it sparked their creativity even more. How I will continue to add awe and wonder to my classroom is to continue to add new items throughout the classroom as much as I can. So far this year I've added, Pets to the home living area, building books, "Reading buddies" for afternoon reading before pick up.

Laura Piacentini Room 4

This year with our class, we have added loose parts of basically anything we can find, rolls, plastics, paper, bottle tops, whatever, and just old things that have been sitting in our closets for years.. Each week we come up with different items to add to the Art area which promotes novelty. These particular students love science so we are always doing some kind of experiments from their play. Like predicting if wet corn will pop in the microwave or dry? We also have new items that were purchased last year and this year, that we open up weekly to add surprise to the classroom. And last we borrow different things from our neighbors and just return them when we are done so it seems we have new things all the time!

In our classroom we use wooden blocks to build things such as: garages, towers, bridges, houses, and tall buildings. Every day the blocks are arranged in a different way. The children bring items from all around the room into the block area to add to the novelty of their new unique structures. Each day we are excited to see the new structures that appear.
Room 5
Miss Patricia and Ms. April ‘s class
FECC

I have always been a collector of "loose parts" and recycled materials. I took pride in the fact that over theyears, when a coworker would say, "does anyone have any ____?" I could usually provide the necessary item. When my former students had a project idea, I typically had the materials necessary to execute their vision. When I was moved to FECC as 1755 support, I brought most of my loose parts with me. I saw the items Ms. Laura and Ms. Turkessa provided for exploration in their rooms and knew I had found a new home for my collection. I continue to save and share materials I collect at home and love it when I notice them being used in someone's classroom. It brings new life to the "Closet Collection" I have gathered over the years and makes me feel like a contributing part of the FECC staff.
~Marjorie

I will continue to bring awe and wonder by switching materials in my classroom. My goal is to switch out our sensory table about every week and every day we pull out something different to do at the tables or on the rug. Our dramatic play area also switches with our different studies. Right now it is a veterinarians office for our animal inquiry unit. Also to bring some awe and wonder we got a pet fish to study for our animal inquiry unit.
Ms. Michelle
Room 6

I plan and implement activities and classroom environments that support go with the story we are reading in the classroom.

We have gone through several transformations in Room 12 to allow for our classroom and work space to be as open and inviting as possible. We have moved areas around the room and have ended up with classroom that feels defined with specific focuses, but open enough to allow projects move from one to the next. We continue to swap in and exchange loose and open ended materials each week to propel the sense of novelty and refresh ingenuity on a daily basis.

Pierce
Room 12
