How did the time period in which the work was written affect how and why it was written? (Think: who was in power at the time Shakespeare wrote this?) A: When Shakespeare had written this, it was known as the Elizabethan era in which people were all invested in creating or viewing their own books, movies, and plays. This Golden Age of Elizabeth involved for people to invest into an establishment to create their own throne while Queen Elizabeth still had power over her people. It's written in a manner where the concept of policing themselves is popular as most of everyone were initializing into their own creations of art. Certain ideas would be censored, but Shakespeare knew of what he could or could not write where he was fully aware of what stories were acceptable to authority and to the public.

How does placing the piece in the context of our time period affect its meaning and how it is perceived? A: In our era; however, it's perceived to be an opportunity to take control of our circumstances rather than our situations taking control over us. It proves to be a hope that we can seize to establish our own power rather than inheriting or allowing for another person in the hierarchy to give it or enforce it upon us. We can utilize our power within the realms and domain of our leaders' qualifications to do so. It's seen as something to find within ourselves, some power to direct and guide us throughout the challenges and obstacles of life.

Person 3: New Historicist Analysis of Passage from Macbeth

"Besides, this Duncan / Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been / So clear in his great office, that his virtues / Will plead like angels" (1.7.16-19).

Answer the following:

the speaker and the one spoken to (could be himself/herself)

Macbeth

the context (what was happening at this point in the play)

This is when Duncan is at Macbeth's home after Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had planned to murder him. Macbeth is saying how good of a king Duncan was and is attempting to convince himself that he shouldn't kill Duncan.

Analyze this passage from the New Historicist perspective. (Hint: Why would Shakespeare emphasize that the King is good in this play?)

Shakespeare wasn't forced to flatter the king of England, but still wanted to show his support to his king, James I who wasn't a direct heir to the throne. Duncan is also one of the two good kings including the "good king" of England. Making the kings in the play seem like noble kings allowed the audience to view their own king in a similar way.

Person 1: Why bother viewing literature through the New Historicism perspective? Why should we still use it to analyze literature?
The New Historicism allows readers to look at the politics of Macbeth's kingdom and look at the widely believed opinions about his leadership. Using these conditions, Shakespeare is able to express his ideas about power, the way it's exercised, and the consequences of having it. By taking into consideration the historical context of Macbeth, the readers can better understand Shakepeare's purpose.
