When students run out of good books to read, their desire to read runs out too. So, introducing the "Books We've Read" board!! This allows students to have a friendly competition between class periods while also providing them with an ever-growing list of quality books. Even teachers, student teachers, colleagues, and intervention specialists can add what they're reading too!
But there's a catch! In order for a student to put their book on the board, they have to turn in a 1 page summary. In addition, they have to create a 1 paragraph introduction to the book to place in a binder next to the bulletin board. By the end of the year, this binder and board will be full of great books and intros for students to glace through when deciding on their next read!

Even when they don't hate it, this gives absolutely no evidence that a student actually read the book. So instead of using a traditional book log, have them create a book journal. Have them choose or bring in a fun notebook that they can call their own. Then, when they do that night's reading, they will write a short paragraph about what they enjoyed or didn't enjoy about the section they read along with a short explanation of what happened. From a teaching standpoint, these discussions allow you to gauge who is actually doing the reading and who is just skimming by. This obviously can only work for choice books, but it allows them the freedom to choose something they'd like better. Use caution when introducing this idea as some students may never finish a book or stop far too soon to even give the book a chance. Require that they read at least 25% of the book before they decide they hate it.
