I think many of these visual thinking routines empower students with learning differences, particularly Dyslexia.

These routines introduce choice and encourage thinking outside the box.

One challenge is working with multiple ages in one class. For example I teach grades 1,2 and 3…the way around it is to pair the older with younger.

Connecting, if possible, with teachers outside of your discipline. I really like reading some of the description on how music can use texture in sound.

I very much look forward to extending literacy in ways I have not before. Not to focus JUST on writing but to also more comprehensively use literacy for discussion, feedack, vocab building....overall giving students a more varied set of tools

Challenge: time for students to complete and then share their work.

A challenge for myself is it collaborate with classroom teachers on texts/ topics that students can make connections to with the selected artwork

I can provide more consistent literacy supports for English Learners in my classroom. I'd also like to provide more dedicated reflection time so that students can pinpoint when and how in each lesson they were reading and creating music.

My challenge… there is not enough time in the classroom teacher schedule to allow them to work together and collaborate for the betterment of the kids.

A lot of time it is left on me to work with th kids on the idea and the teacher will check it off their list as accomplished and they do feel the need to address the lesson because they gave it to me.

Connect: I love words and languages and this was a good reminder of how to incorporate them into art class

Extend: I’d like to push upper level classes with more extensive vocabulary and descriptive language. Ask students to add to translations of vocab in the classroom

Challenge:

It is really hard to teach large classes with very differing levels of English without the help of coteachers that core classes get.

I have incorporated many of the techniques shown today in my classroom. I learned new ways of digging in deeper to have more meaningful art. The challenge I have is time. We have so little time to plan and prepare for each class that I find myself rushing through projects just to be able to move on.

Connect: I am seeing that there are certain things I am intuitively doing that support literacy and identifying those things more readily allows me to increase their robustness as well as use them to advocate for arts.

Extend: I would like to offer more opportunities for students to build with words like the blackout poetry or a treasure hunt of textures.

Challenge: Incorporating technology in a way that enhances what we’re doing and doesn’t take too much time to teach the technology itself.

I connected with the see think wonder routine. We do this in my classroom and it’s a great way to get kids talking. I’d love to Extend it by adding the story telling piece. Looking at an image then creating a story around it. Is it at the beginning, middle, or end of the story? The challenge is how much time do I use for this, I see kids once a week for an hour and they want to MAKE. Sitting on the rug and listening/ talking is tricky for many. Finding the balance of time to talk and time to make is my struggle.

Time and permission to research, reflect, design, implement, fail, re-design and grow.

I rarely feel like I am doing my best work as it seems that time to do my best—as described above— is constantly being widdled away. Also, when asking permission for time to do better, it is clear that my time as an arts educator is secondary to that of home room teachers.

Extension: In class students are required to engage in critiques and discussions about their work.

Challenge: Sometimes an art classroom with students of varying skill levels can be difficult. I focus on differentiated instruction to ensure all students feel supported.

This project helped them to connect with their heritage, their desire to be some one in service. About purpose: Few found that they did not like helping others, while empaths chose careers helping others expanding to fulfill their dreams and creating their own life quotes.

Challenge: taking the time to introduce, and PRACTICE thinking routines, and finding ways that they work for different kinds of groups and individuals within the same classroom

Thinking explicitly as discussion being important to literacy, and how you can have written materials translated for them to respond in their own languages for ELL students, is helpful for me to understand how to best approach literacy in an elementary setting.
