Frederick Douglass was the son an enslaved woman and a white man who wasn't known. He was born on 1818, into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. At the age of 8 he was loaned to his enslaved brother in Baltimore, where he learned to read and write. At the age of 20 after failed attempts he escaped from slavery. He also became the most important leader for African American civil rights.

At the age of 15, he was sent to a notorious "slave breaker" that had ended up whipping him regularly. At the age of 16 he fought back and won, and was never harmed again. Then when he escaped, during September 3rd, 1838 he disguised himself as a sailor. Then with the help of Anna Murray Douglass who he had met while enslaved in Baltimore. As they thought about living life together, She put the fact in his mind that "Frederick, you're not meant to be slave for life".

At the age of 20, he runs away and lands in New York City. writes back a letter to Anna and they end up joining together. After they get married, on September 15 he reunited with Anna and settled in Massachusetts and chose a new name. Douglass and Anna would go on and have 5 kids.

At the age of 23, he spoke of his experience of being a enslaved person. The abolition understood that they had a person who has been through a lot but still the most honored person there. So they asked him to join the Anti-Slavery Society, as a paid lecturer.

At the age of 25 on the lecture tour of the Midwest, He was attacked by an Indiana mob. He published his first autobiography in 1845. Within 3 months, his memoir had sold about 5,000 copies. His book was so best- selling that he went to Europe because he was still hiding from his enslaver. While he was in Europe, he talked about abolition of slavery in the United States where he started gathering supporters .

In 1847 he had went back to the U.S., and began to work on publishing "The North Star". The North start was so important because he could get his message out there to the public, and write articles over about his career. Back in the times it was a big deal to be African and to own a newspaper at the same time.

In Rochester, him and Anna served as conductors for the underground rail road also helping enslaved people flee to free states and Canada. Douglass approved of woman's suffrage, and was the only African American. Then on July 5, 1852, he had did one of his most memorable speeches. "What to the slave is the Fourth of July?" was his speech.

In 1852 the Ladies' Anti- Slavery Society had invited Frederick Douglass to give a speech about independence day. So they invited him to do that on July 4th. In protest he gave the speech on July 5th.

Him and Lincoln had a friendship that went back and forth. After the Civil War, he advocated for African American social and political rights. In 1884, 2 years after his wife Anna died, he married Helen Pitts Douglass and she was an suffrage and abolitionist. Then they ended up getting married .

He was photographed more than any other famous person like president Lincoln and many more. Frederick Douglass once said that "I never want to look like happy amiable fugitive slave, and when you look at a picture of me you're never going to deny that i'm a man worthy of freedom and worthy of citizenship." On February 20, 1895, Douglass died from a heart attack at 77 years old.
