Why is Space Black? by Taylor Plunkett

This phenomenon can be used in elementary to explain darkness and illumination. Even though light travels between the Sun and the Earth, space appears black because there is nothing (e.g. gas, dust, etc.) for the light to reflect off of. This can also be used as a much deeper phenomenon. Since space is filled with billions and billions of stars and each of them give off light why isn't space completely light? The answer lies in the expansion of the Universe.

At night, when part of the Earth is facing away from the sun, space looks black because there is no nearby bright source of light. Even though space has so many stars, that does not mean that all those stars give off enough light to brighten up space. In fact, when a source of light is moving away from you (like a star is), the wavelength of that light is made longer and it makes the light appear on the red spectrum instead of white. This means that the light from the stars moving away from us will shift more towards red, or become invisible altogether.
