In Arthur Miller’s 1949 play, Death of a Salesman, the main character Willy Loman, is trying to control Biff’s life, without allowing him to do what he wants, which is turning him into somebody he is not. Willy spent his life trying to make others happy and succeed, when he never took time to find himself and be happy. 

Some people regret there decisions. Just like Willy, he thought he would be happy controlling somebody else’s life, but in reality he just ended up confused and miserable.

In Mark Twain’s 1884 story, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, Twain creates the main character, Huck Finn, as a boy who relies on himself and his own instincts, which are more right than society’s instincts. The demoralizing society he lives in, does not accept Huck the way he is and wants him to follow the norms of how their world works, however, Huck continues to be himself and not conform to society.

The quote I chose, represents Huck listening to his own heart, rather than follow society’s idea that “helping runaway salves will lead to external damnation”

In Kate Chopin’s 1894 short story, “Story of an Hour”, the main character Louise Mallard, is finally set free by her husbands regulations, and powerful opinions, that get in the way of what she wants. One scene when the air is filled with the smell of rain and the clouds are slowly moving away, represents the grief passing and the nice days are coming where you feel free and independent. There is a stereotype throughout this short story depicting that women are weak, and towards the end, you actually see that women can live on their own and be happy. Stereotypes force individuals to become somebody their not, and they lose their true selves. The men in this story are depicted as independent and strong whereas it’s the opposite for women. But once Louise’s husband dies, she realizes that she is independent and strong.

In Frederick Douglass’s 1845, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass did not know who he was, he did not know who his father was, his age, when he was born; nothing. He was not taught how to read and had little hope of the future. A slave-owner, whipped Douglass, and he was “broken in body, soul, and spirit.” It took Douglass a while to find his identity and self worth.

Douglass lived in place where slaves were demoralized. Douglass had to self manage himself through the struggles he faced, he believed in self reliance, he made the mental and physical effort to create a good career and a happy life for himself.

Individualism comes into play because he gets drunk and is left alone with nothing to accomplish. He is unable to do anything when he is alone except get drunk and linger onto the past. 

The coach’s daughter was out doing what she wanted to do and his wife was out painting in her studio, while he was in his house doing nothing, but get drunk.
