Advantages of Language as a Means of Communication:

1. **Expressiveness:** Language allows for intricate expression of thoughts, emotions, and complex ideas, enabling nuanced and detailed communication.

2. **Versatility:** It is a highly adaptable tool, capable of conveying a wide range of information, from concrete facts to abstract concepts.

3. **Cultural Transmission:** Language is crucial for transmitting culture, traditions, and societal values from one generation to another.

4. **Social Bonding:** Language fosters social connections, allowing individuals to share experiences, build relationships, and form communities.

5. **Learning and Education:** It serves as the foundation for education, facilitating the transfer of knowledge, skills, and information in various fields.

6. **Problem-Solving:** Language enables collaborative problem-solving by facilitating communication within groups and teams.

7. **Record Keeping:** Writing and recording languages help in preserving historical records, literature, and scientific knowledge.

**Disadvantages of Language as a Means of Communication:**

1. **Ambiguity:** Language can be ambiguous, leading to misunderstandings or misinterpretations, especially when words have multiple meanings.

2. **Barriers:** Different languages can create barriers to communication, hindering understanding between individuals or groups who speak different languages.

3. **Subjectivity:** Language is subjective, and individual interpretations may vary. What one person intends to convey may be understood differently by another.

4. **Inefficiency:** Expressing certain abstract or complex ideas can be challenging, and nuances may be lost in translation, leading to inefficiencies in communication.

5. **Miscommunication:** Errors in grammar, pronunciation, or word choice can result in miscommunication, impacting the clarity of the message.

6. **Influence of Emotions:** Emotional states can influence language use, leading to communication that may not accurately reflect the intended message.

7. **Selective Communication:** Individuals may choose to withhold or distort information, leading to selective or biased communication.

8. **Overreliance on Words:** Non-verbal cues and gestures are important aspects of communication, and an overreliance on verbal language may neglect these elements.

While language is a powerful and versatile tool for communication, its effectiveness depends on various factors, including the context, the individuals involved, and the clarity of expression. Being aware of the limitations and actively working to overcome potential disadvantages can contribute to more effective communication.

Self-directed practice:

I am still getting used to directing my own time, and I want to work on managing my time more efficiently, for example using studio time and daytime for doing things that further my work, and using the evenings for recording what I have done in my sketchbook. In my previous specialism I struggled with keeping my sketchbook up-to-date and sometimes wasted studio time updating it. This way, I will also be able to use my evenings to consolidate everything I have done and go over it in my head which will help me understand my practice better.

I want to self-initiate more designated discussions with myself and with others about my ideas – I have found that talking through ideas (with others or myself) makes me much clearer on what ideas I like and don’t like. Discussions with others also often further my ideas, give me references and give me new ideas.

I want to reference from a wider range of subjects. I am going to do more research outside of my designated project research, into anything that interests me – this way I will have a much richer and broader knowledge and collection of references to incorporate into my work. This will make my work more layered and make it easier for me to make conceptual decisions within my work (for example, where to display my work, what colours, textures, and imagery to use, etc.).

Experiment through making and doing more, instead of spending too much of my time brainstorming ideas and then putting off actually doing them – which I do too much of at the moment. Once I have an idea I like, make it real immediately, even though I won’t be sure it will be successful – I can decide that after. That way I will build up a much larger body of work, and my final pieces will be much stronger as they will be based on real-life prototypes.

Evaluation and Review:

Once I have done something, have an interim crit with myself, to see where I can take it now – how to take it further or take it to a new place.

Keep working on ideas even after I feel I’ve made something ‘final’ with them.

Connect ideas and material from different pieces.

Communication:

I want to work on thinking about the audience and how my work communicates/what it communicates.

Use crits, discussions and interacting with people in the studio and relevant audiences, to find out what communicates successfully and what communicates things I don’t want. Record it all in my sketchbook and then remake and work into the pieces using this knowledge, (then repeat the process etc.). This way, I will work on making my pieces communicate what I want them to more successfully.

This will also develop my skills in communication through my work, through surprising me and broadening my knowledge in communication, for example when my piece communicates something I didn’t expect it to.

My topic is surreal communication - I will be researching communication that is unusual or different from what we would consider everyday communicative language. I will be exploring different avenues in this theme, exploring with each how the different forms of this surreal communication can make connection and understanding between people either harder or easier.

I am interested in how people use various 'languages' (e.g. conversations, dance, images, unconscious emotions) to connect mentally with each other and have an understanding of each other's thoughts, feelings, viewpoints, opinions and characters. There are many ways that people connect other than conversations and there are many levels and unspoken complications within conversations - these are what I want to explore. As people we always assume we understand each other completely - how much do we really?
