1-Planning: plan 3-5 lessons that build content understanding and support learning needs based on what you've learned about your school and students in class. You will use this information to fill out your Context for Learning template. Next, you need to write your lesson plans (3-5 plan learning segment). Last, you need to reflect on your plans using the Planning Commentary template to write commentary to support and justify planning decisions.

2-Instruction: video record yourself teaching your lesson plans. Create a learning environment where students are engaged in learning, deepening thoughts, and focused on the subject. You must refer to the Task 2, "What Do I Need to Do?" section of your program handbook to determine the number of clips required or allowed, length of clip(s), and which students can or must be included in the clip (whole class? small group? focus learners?). Students included in videos MUST have signed parent consent form to participate.

3-Assesment: analyze student learning, provide feedback, and encourage students to provide feedback. You will choose one assessment from your learning segment to analyze closely in a written commentary, provide samples of student work, and evidence of feedback for three focus students.

Where did edTPA come from?

edTPA was designed by the Stanford Center for Learning and Assessment Equity (SCALE). Stanford University is the exclusive author and owner of edTPA. SCALE developed edTPA after they received advice and feedback from teachers and teacher educators from experience gained from over 25 years of developing performance-based assessments of teaching. Their experience included the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) Standards portfolio, and the Performance Assessment for California Teachers. The design and review teams have included tons of university faculty, national subject-matter organization representatives (e.g., NCTM, NCTE, NSTA, etc.), and K–12 teachers. edTPA is currently being used in 35 states, as well as the District of Columbia as a summative assessment of teacher preparation.

Co-teaching is where the cooperating teacher and student teacher plan together and then share teaching responsibilities.
Co-teaching could be:
- one teaching while the other observes or assists students
- one teaching while the other works with a small group
- both teaching as a team or in parallel at different stations
- both taking turns with the teaching of particular classes, units, lessons, or activities
- any other form the cooperating teacher sees fit.

Co-teaching provides modeling and feedback for the
student-teacher, boost student learning, and provides high quality instruction in the cooperating teacher’s classes. Student-teachers still need to take responsibility for planning, instructing, and assessing the class during the edTPA learning segment.

In education, academic language refers to the words we use mostly in schools, text books, lessons, assignments and tests. Compared to the words we use every day, academic language is more demanding and complex. It's the vocabulary students need to learn and is necessary for them to succeed in school. Learning, using, and applying academic language is constantly ongoing as new concepts are taught on a regular basis.
