i asked if Catholic images of saints are idolatrous? One student said that he wears a crucifix as a pendant everyday. He doe not believe that it gives him supernatural powers but he is reminded and comforted of the presence of Jesus everyday. It was touching because he spoke with so much conviction defending his faith in class.

I remember teaching Intro to Philo for Grade 11 students, and I simply ask them, "what purpose do you want to have in this ever changing society?", usually I tend to receive answers related to their dream jobs or professions, some students respond with specific items that they want to have and other tangible dream, but one student stand out by saying "my purpose is to help others as I want to be a social worker". So I ask that student why? Then the student responds with a very memorable answer, that student said "because Sir, I did not receive any help when I needed it and I know how hard it is to ask for help and be rejected".

I used to be a senior high school teacher. My students are currently on their college level. There are times when I usually receive messages from them randomly, thanking me for all the life-lessons I have imparted to them during their senior high school years. One of them is the value of studying not just for exams but studying to learn and to gain knowledge.

I also taught Introduction to World Religions and Belief Systems in Senior High School. One time I also received a personal message from my student, thanking me that she has opened herself to believing the possibility that there is a God. She is a nominal Catholic but identifies herself as an atheist.

When both the student and his mom thanked me for the transformation happened to the student. A student who was was once on Deportment Probation became a Deportment Awardee. He thanked me for the trust given, as according to him, only his mistakes were highlighted before. How he is the vice mayor of his municipality. Such a wonderful note to know, and to cherish.

‘Teachers transform lives,’ as they say. I never believed this until I experienced it firsthand. I once had a student whom I’ll describe as someone who’s lost—no direction, no values. When I had the chance to talk to him, I got to know him in a deeper level—I got to know why he wasn’t interested in studying, I got to know why he treated other people like that, and I got to know the ‘real’ him. As his teacher, I was worried about him. So I helped him as much as I can. Through my little help and his drive, he was able to finish his studies and he was able to find himself.

I always tell my 5E advisory class to be responsible and reliable. I’ve shown them how beneficial it is to have those qualities. Before the 2nd trimester examination week, I told them one of our plans is to rearrange their chairs because we have to arrange them alphabetically. I entered the classroom for the homeroom class the next day and I noticed that they were smiling at me. They were waiting for me to notice something as they sit quietly. I was surprised when my 11-year-old students took the initiative to rearrange the chairs before homeroom class. My classroom officers led the action and they were able to encourage their classmates to do it well. I was delighted with the small win they made.
