One important issue the book is family separation. Once you are chosen for the Testing you have a very very small chance of ever seeing them again. This is because the Tosu Officials will send a pair of candidates to a colony where they feel that your talents will be used most effectively. This is because the 7 Stage War left the world in shambles. So, they need to disperse those who make it through in order to revitalize the earth.
This proves very difficult for the candidates. For one, they have to cut all ties to their families. Secondly, they lose the bonds they might have made with any of the candidates during they test. Cia and Tomas face this issue the most. This is because they both love each other. A quote from the book reads, "Because the first time I tell you I'm in love with you, I'd rather not share the moment with Dr. Barnes and his friends." The
problem is, they won't be able to remember that they love eachother. And then, they most likely won't be going to the same colony once they are dispersed.

The theme conveyed in the book is trust. Trust is one of the most important parts of this entire book. This is because in the 4th part of the test, the students are driven multiple states away from reality the main city. Their task is to get back. While trekking back to the city, you will meet other candidates. Some may want to team up. Some may kill you in order to ensure they pass the test. Most candidates teamed up with others from their colonies. On the last 20 miles, Cia and Tomas decided to let Will, another boy from their colony, to walk with them to the end. Turns out that he's willing to do anything to gain a winning spot. A quote from the book reads,"I shove Tomas to the side just as will raises his gun and fires... I see Tomas flinch as the bulletin enters his abdomen. His eyes are wide as he sinks down to his knees... 'What the hell Will?' He smiles behind his gun. 'Isn't it obvious? I'm getting rid of my competition. I didn't lose my brother and come all this way just to be told I'm not good enough to make it into the university. I made that choice early on. Only you wouldn't die. Thankfully, a couple of the others were easier to kill before I ran out of quarrels." Obviously, Cias trust was totally broken.

One thing the book has helped me broaden my understanding of is loyalty. When the candidates were in stage 4 of the testing, they had to be loyal to the candidates they teamed up with. It showed me the pain another person can feel if their loyalty is misused. And how hard it can be for that person to think of you the same ever again. A quote reads, "Only I was wrong. The bracelet belonged to Zandri. How did it end up,I'm Tomas' bag?.. The bracelet. The dried blood on Tomas' knife. The haunted look in his eyes. Wills words that Tomas is not who I think he is... The girl who flirted with Tomas. The girl he must have killed."
