Then, the lecturer, Prof Madya Dr. Sharipah Ruziana Syed Aris came in and started with a brief ice-breaking session for each of us to introduce ourselves and I could see that it was a good start to build positive rapport with the students. Then, she also explained about the course information based on Scheme of Work on the list of task and assignments that we will be doing for this semester, especially on the topics that we are interested to explore with for our research proposal. In addition, she also reminded us to start looking for journals related to our interest as a good start to have an overview of what we will be working on later and to bring laptop in the nest lecture. The part which interest me the most is when she guide us to recall the stages and steps needed for the research proposal which are Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 and these can be found from the notes that I jotted down during her lecture. Moreover, this process really helped me to recall the crucial parts as I started to get flashbacks of my academic exercise (AE) during my last semester of my bachelor degree years and since I finished my study in January early this year, I still could remember some tips from my previous supervisor to aid me for my research proposal with further guidance from Prof Madya Dr. Sharipah.

Honestly, there are some new insights which help me to understand some of the elements that we discussed better and I am very grateful as I still recall most of it from my experience doing my academic exercise (AE) last semester. For an example, I contributed to the discussion when Dr Sharipah was explaining about the research gap where I mentioned that the gap can be made in such a way by mentioning that there could be few or limited research has been done in local or Malaysia context. In addition, I was so happy when she agreed to my points and jotted down on the board and further explained my points to my other classmates. Besides that, for research questions, she also pointed out that they should be feasible, clear, significant and ethical and most importantly related to the topic. Then, as we proceed to the significant of the research, she asked us to recall the points that she mentioned in Week 1 which I contributed one point which is the policymakers. Lastly, the operational definition of how the term is used in our study, not just the meaning in general alone. Overall, she also reminded us of how many pages that she expected us to produce for each section for our research proposal to serve as a guideline for our writing later on. Furthermore, I also believe that it helped me to further understand how a title should be written as explained by Dr Sharipah. In addition, when Dr Sharipah explained about my title, I realised that the title that I wrote down, the on that I used for my AE was not sufficient enough in terms of the depth of the study, especially for master’s level. Hence, she asked me to include the views from subject matter experts on literature, poetry to be specific. After that, coming from the prayer’s break, I was grateful that Dr Sharipah was very kind to come to my table when I asked for her favour to look at my revised working title again and when we sat down and discussed, she finally managed to help me to create a new title which is still relevant and related to my previous title that is ‘SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS AND STUDENTS’ VIEWS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF POETRY CURRICULUM AT UNIVERSITY LEVEL’. She also was very kind to have a look at my statement of the problem as well as my research questions and research objectives which after some discussion, I decided to remove one research question and replaced it with a new one. Then, the second part of the lecture, Dr Sharipah explained about the two types of sources which are the primary source and secondary source, the importance of reading journals especially to support argument, theories, frameworks, instruments, designs, problems of statements, how they analyse the data (numbers=quantitative, interview=qualitative) and also the recommendations of the study. Finally, she explained about the literature reviews such as (2.0= background) and many more. However, she was very responsible for making sure that the students have something to do as a way of helping us to have a clearer view of what we would like to do for our research proposal. Thus, she sent numerous links to the sample of literature tree that we can use as a guide and also come out with an outline for chapter 2. Then, once finished, we were asked to submit our works at her Padlet for further probing and discussion in the following lecture. Besides that, as I was browsing through the sample, I realised that these tasks actually helped me to see the flow of the outline for my Chapter 2 and I was so happy to be able to do some mind-mapping, although I must say that I am not really good with it. On the side note, I reread the articles and journals to get an overview of how I was supposed to organize the main topics and sub-topics. Then, while trying to figure out how to do it, I recalled some tips from Dr Sharipah when she did some samples of the whiteboard in the previous lesson and bu using those topics, I managed to accomplish the task within the stipulated time given. ]]> 2019-03-26 05:59:33 UTC https://padlet.com/nicqafyqq/researchwithstyle/wish/345107064 nicqafyqq https://padlet.com/nicqafyqq/researchwithstyle/wish/346870169 For week 5, Dr Sharipah did a face to face consultation with everyone as an attempt to help us understand the outline for Chapter 2 better so that the subtopics are actually aligned with the topic for our research proposal. Moreover, I believe that I benefit more from this personal consultation as both parties could actually discuss the subject matter in an in-depth manner. This is because I could explain to Dr Shripah personally of my understanding of the concept written on the paper and she also could probe me for further discussion. Moreover, this consultation allowed some privacy for me as compared to sharing my materials with the whole class as I am a very introvert person and having to share my materials which have not been approved is a taboo for me as I do not want to be judged by others, unless if it is a complete product, then I would have some confidence in presenting it to the whole class. While Dr Sharipah conducted the consultation, she also assigned us to do a mini task that was finding the design, instrument and sampling procedure and the instrument of the articles that we use for Chapter 2. I believe that this task will be beneficial for both our individual research proposal and also our upcoming test in week 6. Then, we were required to share what we intended to do for our research and details related to sampling, data collection and others. The sharing session was intended for the other members to contribute their ideas on how to make their friends research better and after the person is done, the next person will do the same until all members presented theirs. Then, Dr Sharipah did a brief consultation on the rough ideas for our research proposal. In addition, she did ask several of us to share our outline with the whole class by asking the chosen students to write theirs on the board. Then, Dr Sharipah would explain what went wrong with the topic, the target sample, the sampling procedure as well as the type of research design. In addition, during the break, I managed to get personal consultation from Dr Sharipah as I asked her to go through my statement of problem and the research questions. I am very grateful that she even helped me to come out with an additional research question to meet the standards for the master’s level. Thus, I have a total of four research questions. Thus, Dr Sharipah had decided that we need to read two chapters from the reference book, Fraenkel and Wallen on Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 related to variables and sampling. Thus, she ended up asking my classmates and I to complete a task which she has posted on her Padlet. The task consist of two items which are suggesting a theory to support my study and proposing a conceptual framework for my study. As far as the theory for my study is concerned, I believe that I would like to propose or use the Reader-Response Theory of RRT for my study. This is because I found that it is an intriguing approach in approaching the literary texts as compared to other conventional approaches like the New Criticism approach. In addition, RRT places a huge emphasis on the value of the interaction between the reader and the text which enable to form of the literary to occurs be it poem, novel, prose or others. Contrary, the conventional approach like the New Criticism places more emphasis on the text itself rather than focusing on the learners. Thus, RRT allows more room of freedom and creativity for the learners in transacting with the text, as compared to the conventional approaches where there is only one correct interpretation and very much teacher-centred rather than learner-centred (Garzón & Castañeda-peña, 2015). Besides that, as for the conceptual framework, I google for the sample from other people’s studies and develop my own conceptual framework. I believe that self-learning is a must especially at the master’s level as I am accountable for my own learning despite not having any classes for that matter. The framework can be seen from the attachment below.  Overall, I learnt something new this week that is how to come up with a conceptual framework and the significance of it for my study.

So on the weekend, I started choosing related articles and worked around the task given. Thus, I am very happy for my presentation as generally Dr Sharipah commented that I did a good job for the outline and the only adjustment that I need to make is just to add another conceptual framework that cater to curriculum development as the existing framework that I have for now only cater to my RQ1 and RQ2. As a result, now that I have received the necessary feedback, I would like to start writing with my research proposal. Not to mention, this week also marks that the submission for the research proposal that is just around the corner. Initially, Dr Sharipah refused to hold a class for this week as she announced that those who wish to see her can do so on the 18th June, but I asked her if it would be possible to hold a class, not knowing that she had to catch a flight at 8 on the same day. However, to my surprise, she agreed to come and I am humbly grateful for her action. Throughout the class, I learn a lot more information when she commented on my friends' presentation, even more when I had individual consultation with her just before she ended the lecture. I hope with the knowledge that I received, not just from this week class, but also from the previous weeks, would be beneficial for me to finish my research, meeting the standards outlined by Dr Sharipah.
