Looking at the statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics it appears that using the internet is a pretty normal thing to do. A whopping 85% of Australians over the age of 15 were active users of the web. So what does this mean for the greater good of the not-so-keen internet users? Do they sit and stare blankly at a wall all day while the rest of us scroll through Instagram?

The concept of the digital divide is rooted in the gap between people who do not have readily available modern technologies and those that do.

No longer is the divide just between those who have a telephone in the family home or not – it seeps and leaks further into the cracks of society. The divide is most prevalent between those in cities and rural areas, those with access to education and those without access to education, and on a greater scale, the gap is between developed countries and third world countries (What is Tech Target, 2014).

At an Australian national level, the policy regarding technology within education has the aim of preparing students for further education and training that grants them the ability to live and work in a digital world (Howell, 2012). The Australian curriculum works to teach digital competencies to students in such a way that it is transferrable in their school, home, work and community lives.
