Chia Eng Say was a multi-millionaire businessman from Fujian, China. Bought license for quarrying in 1930s. Opened 2 adjacent quarries that merged into 1 (SG Quarry). The road by Upper Bukit Timah Truss Bridge (near The Rail Mall - Springleaf Prata Place) is named after him. He built homes near the quarry for his workers which eventually became Kampong Chia Eng Say.

Fun fact: In 1937, Chia Eng Say won tender to supply all the granite to build the (Old) Supreme Court Building. All the stones/granite were from his quarries.

I resonate most with time as it tells students where spaces were like in the past and the possible reason for the change. It also makes them imagine what it could look like in the future

During my own group research I found out that there are other information about the railway and rail corridor that I can share with students. For example how the land ownership changed from Malaysia and Singapore. Why did Singapore choose to exchange 6 land parcels for this. I can use this information for my next camp

I think time resonates most

I think it’s fascinating to understand what the same place was for, what stayed and what changed

It makes one wonder and reflect upon why some things stay the same or were kept the same and why some things don’t last or were done away with

I think it might make students more conscious of the places they go to in future esp if we extend it to their prior experience of places they are familiar with (like in Kamal’s sharing of DFQ)
