In reality some events and topics are novel and unique or not a laughing matter.

When introducing concepts, strategically, ask students if they can relate and how. Google Classroom and so many other apps allows you to ask students questions and for student to share and comments publicly for to see. Also, this is a chance to be strategic with your start of the year interest and "all about me" surveys. Ask students targeted questions that you can spiral into instruction later.

Also try to provide space and to encourage students to find and submit video clips, cartoons, and other things that find that they feel connects or brings humor to the subject. If your students are old enough to handle posting original comments on LMS, like the Google Classroom STrEaM or on the class website, encourage it by incorporating what they find into your lessons.
