Classroom Environment

At the beginning of the year, are teacher handed us out colorful blank paper, which she told us we were supposed to write how we were feeling or just anything in general. On top of that, she allowed us to write down music suggestions, and she created our classroom playlist to listen to while we wrote in our little journals, you can call them. So every time, before she would start to teach us, she would tell us to write in our journals for 15 minutes, and she played our music while we wrote. It was very nice to take a break from learning and decompress. She made learning enjoyable, allowed us to relax, and reduced any anxiety we may have had, especially if we had a rough day.

Social Development

Social development is very important for preschool children. It teaches children how to interact positively with other children and is beneficial in the long term. Very important for one's emotional well-being. A crucial memory I have was when it was time for recess and I had no one to play with, so this other girl came up to me and introduced herself to me. She asked me to go play with her and her other friends, and we ended up playing house together, and it was a lot of fun. To this day, I am still friends with her, and we have made some fond memories together.

Motor Skill Development

A big focus during elementary school for me specifically was motor skill development. I was able to use my hands and learned how to properly hold my pencil in my hand. Once, I was able to learn how to hold my pencil, I was able to write my name down correctly in the top corner of my homework. Motor skills helped me process and learn how to hold my pencil correctly and was able to hold my hand correctly and steady.

Project Based Learning

Doing projects helps students gain knowledge by working rigorously on a certain topic and investigating into it. Taking the time to understand what they are researching, beginning to ask themselves questions, problem solving, and challenging themselves in ways they didn't know. It also helps with working and communicating with others if it's a group project, which I had to do for mine. and three other people were in a group for our physics class, and we had to do the egg drop project. You had to come up with some sort of contraction to safely hold an egg and drop it from a certain height, and the egg doesn't crack. It took a lot of testing and thinking for our group to come up with this contraption, especially when their were stipulations to the project. On top of that, we also had to do a paper on the project including writing an essay of some sort and doing quite extensive math which made us have to think problem solving, and engaging in the difficult math questions.

Collaborative Learning

When students come together in small groups, it can be beneficial from sharing different learning goals, expressing each other's knowledge, and also developing social skills from the interaction. A lot of this does happen in college, which I have had to do, which had broaden my knowledge, my thinking, and especially my social skills. In my one class, she would make us switch seats each week so we weren't with the same people and were introduced to other people, but also to share our bits of knowledge. She would make us go into small groups and talk about what we were learning, and then she would make us go into a large group which was the whole class. And from there we would bounce off of each other and what we believed and think and we build off from each other. Collaborating with one another was beneficial for our knowledge, being able to socialize with others as well in a big group, and to think critically.

Behaviorism Theory

An aspect of my childhood I am looking into is the behaviorism theory. When it comes to this theory, it's about learning being a change in observable behavior, however, it is shaped by external factors and the use of conditioning. When I was younger, if we did well on a test, such as an A or B, we would get a sticker of a smiley face or a star. Which told me that I did well on my test and that my teacher was proud of me. This positive reinforcement made me want to continue to do my best so I can get that sticker that shows that I am doing well, and I have been learning well.

Reflective Thinking

I am looking back on my childhood of the time when I used reflective thinking, which I can say I did the most when it came to writing any essay. Reflective thinking helps students reread what they have written and, in return, revise and shape certain areas. Which is what I did, I would go back and reread what I had written. I would look for misspelling, run-on sentences, punctuation, etc. I was internally processing my feedback and figuring out ways I could improve my paper and make it better.

Motivation

Motivation is what drives students to keep moving and continuing what they are doing. To keep showing up, to keep getting better for themselves, digging deep into themselves and finding that push to keep them going. This motivation for me was when I was on the tennis team in high school. What motivated me was when I continued to keep winning in my singles matches, and my family would come to cheer me on and help build me up. I was driving myself to do better, I wanted to make my coach/team proud, as well as my family. I wanted to move up in tennis and make it to varsity, so I kept telling myself to push, and I would make it to the finish line.

Studying: Spaced Repetition

I am looking back on my high school-college years when it came to my studying habits. Studying over a longer period before an exam helps build muscle memory as well as help enhance your long-term memory. I would use this technique throughout high school and into college. If I knew it was going to be a big exam and I knew that I was struggling a lot in that class, I would start studying earlier then later. I would study a week or two in advance of the exam so over time that information builds and sticks with me instead of me waiting to the last minute and cramming all the information into my head. I feel this helped strengthen my memory and helped build my long-lasting memory, which made me more prepared for the exams, which were beneficial for me because I ended up succeeding better.

Technology

Technology can be very beneficial for students to learn and make education more accessible for some, can be very engaging, and create different study plans for students and practice tests. This was heavenly important during my time in middle school because this was when technology was being introduced to us. I would use our Chromebooks that were given to us and create Quizlets that would help me study, use Khan Academy for practice tests, study videos, as well as lectures. It was a lot more efficient and easier for me to create these different practice tests, study methods on the computer than to handwrite, which would have taken longer. I was able to take my computer anywhere and just study when I wanted to, allowing me to have more time to study and be prepared for my tests.
