The newspapers published the cipher, and within a week schoolteacher Donald Harden and his wife Bettye contacted the publisher with a solution to the cipher. The cipher read, "I like killing people because it's so much fun it is more fun than killing game in the forest because the man is the most dangerous animal of all to kill...."
This was the first letter the Zodiac killer sent, and wouldn't be the last.

Cecelia Sheperd, 22, and Bryan Hartnell, 20, were on a date at Lake Berrynessa when the Zodiac killer struck again. Different from Zodiac's previous two attacks where his victims were shot, he tied up Sheperd and Hartnell and stabbed them multiple times. When emergency services arrived both of them were in critical condition. Hartnell survived the attack, but Sheperd died of her wounds shortly after emergency services arrived. Hartnell went on to work on films about the Zodiac Killer.

After the first cipher was easily cracked, Zodiac significantly increased the difficulty of his next cipher. Police realized that there were garbled letters next to coherent sentences, most likely to throw them off. There were also frequent spelling errors in the English parts of the letters. The cipher read, " Here it is I kill both night and day. I live by the gun barrel aim so quit wishing for game to be over.. wrist in locks? Now angry dangerous. I won't change any of game".

This cipher is the shortest out of any of Zodiac's ciphers. The letter reads- MY NAME IS- followed by a 13 letter cipher. In the letter he also states that he as killed ten people to date. One of the solutions reads "ALFRED E. NEUMAN," which was a problem, since that wasn't a real person-it was the name of the mascot of MAD magazine. Even though this isn't the name of a real person, its still theorized that it's the correct answer because it fits with Zodiac's sense of humor.

He also served in the navy where he could have definitely learned to code, and he was in a car accident that caused injury to his brain, which may have damaged his ability to control urges. In addition to this, Kathleen Johns, a kidnapping victim possibly by Zodiac, identified Kane.

Sullivan also disappeared for a few days shortly after a Zodiac murder. His glasses matched the police sketch of Zodiac, and his footprints matched the Barrynessa attacker's. He was also hospitalized several times for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

In Robert Graysmith's book, Allen was identified as the Zodiac killer. He wore a Zodiac brand watch, and owned the same caliber gun as the Zodiac shootings. Police also found bloody knives in his car, which Allen said were for chickens. Allen was also dishonorably discharged from the navy, and fired from his schoolteacher job for multiple accounts of sexual assault. He was ambidextrous, which may have assisted him in writing his ciphers. He was also identified as Zodiac by Mike Mageau, one of the few Zodiac survivors. However, in spite of all of this evidence, DNA testing ruled Allen out as a suspect.
