The effects included a decrease in population obviously, but famine was striking china during this time. But, the policy did do very well according to the control in population. in 2013, China allowed couples to have a second child, but only 12% of the adults went through with this.

China basically eyes tibet for a while, driving out the Dalai lama, their sort of spiritual leader. These people are often repressed and resort to intense and graphic ways of protesting, such as lighting themselves on fire. China, not liking the fact that people were making themselves crispy still deny that's their fault.

To control famine, the government instituted a One child policy. Social effects began to backfire on them as some areas often commit infanticide in order to have a male child, to keep the family name going. Not to mention the riots that broke out that killed some population control officials. For forty years this policy has been in place for most groups, now having wiggle room for another child, for a third a steep tax has to be paid, most likely paid by the elite.

At the time of the outbreak the scared citizens changed how they lived to be super cautious. The press was discouraged from reporting on the situation so people weren't warned quickly. Long term causes are changed laws for the way that china responds to emergency situations.
-one child policy
In 2015 it became apparent that china was suffering from it's limit on children in families. Not allowing new generations to form with more people has caused a large fraction of the population to be 65 years or older. The policy change in 2015 has influenced a lot of women to have second children. Causing hospitals to be crowded.

The epidemic is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal respiratory illness; is known as severe acute respiratory syndrome. In 2002 and 2003, an outbreak of SARS swept across southern China and caused 8,098 cases, and over 770 deaths reported in 37 different countries. After the epidemic, the government spent 11.7 billion yuan to address the deficiencies in diseases control and prevention system at the national and provincial levels. Public health in China as a whole has improved: it went from serving as a social role to actually raising money to research and develop their facilities. For example, a lot of Chinese cities are now equipped with pressure isolation ambulances, a feature never before seen in China before SARS.

A guy named Liu Jianlun ended up passing the sickness on to multiple people before he passed away in Kwong Wah Hospital. The outbreak began November 16, 2002. On May 19, 2004, the WHO announced China as free of further cases of SARS. The government is now more adept at responding to pubs emergences and crises. The government has learned to be more transparent in these situations because it decreases the time necessary to respond to the crisis.

-HUKOU Household Responsibility System

Coming into effect from January 2016, China's new universal two-child policy was the culmination of years of loosening its family planning laws, which, since 2014, permitted ethnic minorities, rural couples with a first-born girl, as well as any couple in which at least one party is an only child, to have two children

The subsequent slow response from the central government to control this, which was widely criticized as a cover-up, enabled the virus to cross the border into Hong Kong and spread to the world at large. In July 2003 the State Council's general office put together a task force to start drafting the government's overall contingency plans for public crises. The State Council also established a permanent emergency response office reporting directly to the cabinet in 2006, and the Emergency Response Law was passed the following year. From the end of 2003 until 2006, the central government injected 25.7 billion yuan (HK$32 billion) to upgrade facilities for public health emergencies and hospitals for infectious disease.

By 2006 the Ministry of Health had announced that a disease prevention and control system was basically established and that an infectious disease reporting system covered more than 95 per cent of counties.
