The 1990s brought in a lot of trends but some where so popular that they have stuck around or make comebacks to this day. Some of the most popular trends included brown lipstick, thin eyebrows, dark smokey eyes and jet black tight-lining the waterline. In 2023 90s super smokey eye makeup and taupe/brown lipstick made a comeback and was very popular. Contradicting to the 80s glowy wet look skin the 90s saw a trend of matte foundation. There were some very popular brands and products in the 90s such as MAC lipsticks especially the pale lipstick which was a nude pinky colour that people usually wore with smokey black eyeliner. Another product that was a craze in the 90s was blue mascara, it was very popular among teens and usually sold out very fast. There's many brands we all love and use now that really got popular in the 90s such as L'Oreal, Revlon, MAC, Clinique, Wet n wild, Maybelline and Urban decay. Some of the main celebrities that influenced the 90s makeup scene were Pamela Anderson who really trademarked the dark eyes thin brows and pinky nude lip, Victoria Beckham who made brown lipstick come into play with a tanned face and brown smokey eyes, along with the it girls that brought in natural glam such as Jenifer Anniston and Courtney Cox. 90s makeup wasn't really outrageous or laughed about which is probably why we see so many people channeling it now as it still fits into place in the beauty industry and you can wear it about your everyday life.

The hair of the 1990s was still heavily influenced by the 1980s but we really saw some new, fun crazy styles coming into play. There were so many different crazes and styles throughout the years. one style that never died was the 90s blowout. This was influenced through the 80s but became more glam and red carpet in the 90s. it was light fluffy and had volume but wasn't outrageous and you could still wear it day to-day. There was also the tight 90s curls which were seen on Julia Roberts natural hair which influenced people to mimic that with curling irons which was also a very 80s look but again in the 90s it got made a bit more day to-day wearable. Then there was the 90s up-dos which included braids, small pony tails, messy buns, slicked back in the front then crazy in the back, we have all seen those and again it has come back in fashion today and you see a lot of people recreating these iconic styles. The other popular trend in the 90s was colourful hair extensions and different textures in the hair. For example Christina Agulera had blond hair with streaks of black extensions some parts were poker straight and others were crimped or braided. There was also a very popular list of hair accessories such as butterfly clips which are still a trend today one of the biggest hair trends, claw clips which most women own to this day. People also wore beads in their hair or bobble with beads, bandanas, scrunchies, colourful elastic bobble and many many more.

The 1990s was a decade of fashion, makeup, hair and style for sure but, not all were good. Some of the main social factors of the 1990s involved gays and lesbians coming closer to entering the mainstream media with their own fashion and looks, yet they often faced violent assaults and an antigay backlash as people didn't like seeing women embracing the masculine fashion and men wearing makeup and feminine hairstyles. The male crisis and the crusade for gay rights also made headlines. Gay men found it increasingly difficult to be themselves in the 90s as lad culture was on the rise and the 80s feminine men were being phased out rapidly which meant many heterosexual men felt troubled and lost. Nevertheless, although the majority of Americans surveyed in 1998 believed that homosexual relations were acceptable, violence and a legal backlash against gay rights occurred throughout the decade.

So how has the 1990s affected makeup in modern day society? The many, many subcultures of the 90s has created several trends over the years that have come back and stormed the beauty community in the past decade. For example, a massive trend in 2022 was recreating Pamela Andersons iconic smokey eyed thin brows that was an easily recognisable look when she was at her peak. This was mainly due to a show that came out about her early career and life that showed all her iconic looks throughout the 90s. That also goes for the 90s grunge look which Marc Jacobs recreated their fashion line a few years ago and on the runway had some incredible 90s grunge makeup looks that started a trend to bring back the 90s. People started to do their makeup in different 90s styles including the girly pop icon side with glittery makeup and pops of pastel colours in their makeup. The 90s is one of the biggest influences on makeup to this day probably because there were so many subcultures and a lot of the makeup is still considered in fashion today like the runway looks and the glamorous Hollywood red carpet makeup, even the grunge and girly makeup. You can also see a lot of the women famous in the 90s on social media recreating their iconic looks from the era and reliving the decade through makeup which is very fun and nostalgic to watch. This also tends to set trends in the younger community in the beauty industry and many makeup brands have even brought out makeup lines dedicated to the decade or movies/shows/celebrities from the decade.

Influence of the 1990s on modern day Hair

So, the same question goes for hair. How did the 1990s affect modern day hair styles and cuts? Well the 90s defiantly had a big affect on hair, especially hair cuts. One style that has come massively into trend again is the "Rachel Green" haircut which is a long bob with many layers through it. This is because the biggest 90s show was Friends and it is still one of the most popular shows today. Jennifer Annistons character Rachel Green was a beauty icon back then and still is now. Many women love her outfits but especially her hair styles. She also had many hair accessories but the main one you see now that is very, very popular is the claw clip which is a basic accessory but can create many hairstyles and give a simple classy look. Pamela Anderson again affected more than just makeup but hair swell. Her iconic messy bun and bangs have come back into style majorly in the past few years and you will seeder iconic undo on many influencers and young people today. Another 90s trend that you will see everywhere today is coloured extensions which were heavily influenced by Christina Agulera where she had bleached blonde have witch strips of black extensions throughout it. This is very popular today where many people have different colours deliberately not blended in to make a statement hair style. Lastly the other hair trend that is popular are the girl band hairstyles with the butterfly clips and the fun, cute updos that are very popular today.

Many standards during the 1990s were relaxed, including those regarding fashion, hair and makeup. Offices across the country adopted casual dress codes and loosened the strictness of how women wear their hair and makeup whilst at work. Although employers at first allowed dress-down Fridays or casual days during summers only, many companies adopted casual dress as a full-time policy by the end of the decade which now is still in place in many offices. In addition, young people all over were influenced by a new style of rock music known as grunge, started to wear loose-fitting jeans, old flannel shirts, and T-shirts. One of the main people in the media that influenced this grunge look was Kurt Cobain, he grew his hair long and wore ripped jeans and long baggy t-shirts. Some fashion designers incorporated these thrift store influences into their seasonal lines such as Marc Jacobs who did a whole grunge line on it. The 1990s brought in a lot of new sub-cultures and new interesting fashion, hair and makeup trends which we saw mainly through new forms of music. Music is a massive thing and certain artists have to power to influence their fans in many ways but one of the main ways is how they dress. You notice at many concerts you go to everyone at the concert will have the same sort of style which is usually mirrored by the artist. The hip-hop culture popularized oversized jerseys, baggy clothes, and bold sneakers, usually all block primary colours. Hiphop makeup was very 80s inspired if you look at shows like the fresh prince of bell air you can see the makeup is very 80s like with bold colours but the hair is very 90s with bobbles beads and colourful accessorises. Pop icons like Britney Spears and the Spice Girls introduced a more fun and glamorous side, with platform shoes, pleated mini skirts, colourful pastel crop tops. The hair and makeup of these women had a massive impact on younger girls of this decade as the hair was fun undoes with clips, accessories and fun colours. The Makeup we saw on these women was fun soft and glam, lots of glitter, pinks blues and purples with think perfect brows and pinky nude lipstick. A new genre of music took place in the uk called Brit Pop which led a massive fashion and hair movement. This genre included bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Travis, the verve etc. The Brit Pop icons wore baggy casual clothing and was not just fashion it was a statement that these bands weren't posh or well of they were just simple northern lads who like to make music. Oasis made football tops a real fashion piece with their Man City strips, Blur made a new style described as ‘mod-ual’ - a combination of Mod and Casual style. Key elements of 90s Britpop style for men would include tracksuit tops, Fred Perry polos, suit jackets, Harrington jackets, parka’s, DMs, denim jeans and, of course anything Adidas. They also created a big hair movement with the "mod" hair cut which is short on top long in the back like a mullet with more hair at the sides.

Over the past 20 years, the beauty market has grown by 4.5%. The makeup and beauty product market has proven it can achieve stable and continuous growth, as well as the ability to avoid economic crash. In the late 1990s, the global cosmetics market experienced a slight slowdown as the retail sales of cosmetics dropped a significant amount, mainly due to declining sales in Asia-Pacific. However, other regions reported further growth, e.g., the US market that grew by 3 % to 5 %, mainly due to population growth and the rise of new stars and trends.
