Taylor Swift’s music video to ‘The Man’ is essentially the embodiment of Judith Butler’s theory on gender performativity. Perhaps, at first glance, this is potentially not as striking or evident as it could be, but upon factoring in the context of the music video, as well as the audio codes of the actual lyrics, it is clear the the music video’s prime intention is to convey the restrictive, rigid gender roles, as well as how rituals are performed and conveyed within the media in order to establish one’s assumed gender identity.

How is this applicable to this music video?

Butler essentially argues that gender is a role we play and is constructed by following a series of norms and performing a series of ‘rituals’, which is arguably mirrored in this music video, in which Taylor Swift is taking on a persona of a man by engaging in rituals which have evolved to become typical markers of masculinity. Immediately, the dress codes of Taylor in the medium shot at the beginning begin to establish this for an audience, and the suit that her persona is wearing connotes strength, power, and illustrates a sense of authority of her male persona. Furthermore, the character’s gesture codes at 0.30 in the music video is another prime example of engagement in a masculine ritual, and again connotes power in the workplace - another attribution made with masculinity by society. Throughout the video, we see Taylor’s persona engage in myriad rituals which portray how society’s rigid, structured power dynamics work and how the way you engage with society, dress, portray yourself, and generally behave result in society's assumptions on gender identity. Essentially, the gender performativity theory is easily applicable to lots of media texts, this one included; however, in this music video in particular, if Taylor was portraying herself as a woman whilst simultaneously taking on these rituals and behaviours, then this theory would not be as easily applied. The central theme in this video is gender and how this can impact your power, and hence, it would establish and portray a whole other message had Taylor not been taking on a masculine persona.
