Aquatic invertebrates play an important role in aquatic food webs.
2. Planktonic invertebrates such as rotifer are important to be the food for fish larvae. Because the mouth gap of larvae is tiny and they can only consume these planktonic invertebrates to obtain nutrients. 
3. Benthic invertebrates like crabs, clams, and polychaeta conducts activities on the sediment (sand, soil). They forage at the bottom of the water and frequently dig holes and channels through the sediment. As they feed, many wastes such as dead organisms and plants, or left-out food from other organisms will be consumed and cleaned away from the sediment, which avoids the accumulation of waste that would spoil the quality of the ecosystem. 
4. The holes and channels made by the benthic invertebrates allow water to flow through the sand and soil. Through this, the sediment can stay aerated and healthy which contributes to a more balanced ecosystem. That is why when one is missing, many will be affected.
