2.Coffee or Tea
Teck Yang: Since the Chinese people started to take a liking to coffee, Starbucks has over 600 stores in China. Since coffee and tea are similar products that can substitute each other, demand for tea would fall , and as a result the supplier would lower the price of tea to get a competitive edge towards coffee.

Non- price determinants will cause the demand curve to shift upwards. In this case, an example of the non-price determinant is the expectations of future relative prices. If the expected price is high, then Dd curve shifts upwards. - Irina

Chuah: It's true that your textbook uses shift upwards, but remember, try to think of shifting rightwards. And yeah, if people expect prices to go up in the future, then they'll buy now now now, which is what results in an increase in demand

Um sir, so the curve will shift to the right then?

Coffee prices will shift to the right because as demand for coffee rises the supply will drop forcing the supply curve to move to the left. More people are consuming and demanding for coffee which means that supply is gradually dropping. As coffee suppliers only have limited amount of coffee and demand for them are increasing, they must increase the price of their coffee to be able to gain more profit as their coffee stock decreases.
