  • There is a much higher demand for Rare Earth Metals such as Yttrium and Thulium
  • This is because there is a growing middle class worldwide and therefore, more people have a discretionary income and can afford luxuries 
  • Therefore, more people can afford expensive technology, such as phones, computers and iPads.
  • This increases global demand and therefore, supplies decrease, reducing availability for future generations.

The World Bank believes that economic growth is pushing China towards a water crisis. China currently has a average renewable freshwater resource of 2000 tonnes per capita (this is double the UN definition of water scarcity). The after resources of China are not evenly distributed as 20% of the total water is used by the coal industry and 70% is used in agriculture and farming, both of these are located in the north of China which is an area currently suffering from water scarcity (average water availability per capita is 200 tonnes). Alternatively in Beijing the total consumption exceeds the supply for water by 70% (2012) as society became more developed. As a country industrialises and becomes more developed it uses more water resources and more people have access to facilities such as toilets and showers, alongside a rise in manufacturing. Middle-classes view water as a limitless resource and something which will not become scarce however this is quite the opposite. As there is a higher demand for water there is more stress on supplies which can lead to the water resources becoming threatened and areas to experience water scarcity.

    On the other hand, the growth of the middle classes could lead to an increased supply of eat as the middle classes are more ducated. The middle classes are more educated which means that they are more aware of the effects on the environment.   • The amount of primary materials extracted from the earth rose from 22 billion tonnes in 1970 to 70 billion tonnes in 2010, with the richest countries consuming on average 10 times as many materials as the poorest countries, and twice as much as the world average 
  • Global material use has rapidly accelerated due to growth of middle class since 2000 as emerging economies like China undergo industrial and urban transformations that require large amounts of iron, steel, cement, energy and construction material 
  • Competition for resources in global markets e.g oil food and materials will increase the demand for food imports may grow at a higher rate than the increase in population, largely due to increased consumption by the new middle class

Higher disposable income will mean that more people are able to buy smart phones, increasing the demand and putting a strain on the availability of resources. This reduced availability will lead to higher prices as the rare earth elements will become rarer.

    However as people become more educated they may reduce the amount of times they replace their phones due to growing concern for the environment and finite resources.   • Reduction in traditional farms for meat/ dairy farms because of higher demand
  • Price of traditional grain foods goes up (less availability due to less farming and needs of cattle)
  • Poorer cannot afford  grain or meat due to high demand
    • Growth of middle class —> higher food prices and less available

    However, increase in disposable income means more people are likely to be more educated and are more aware of what they are eating which leads to development of ways to preserve food or reduce consumption which in turn can lead to ideas like vegetarianism/ veganism spreading.
