Sometimes you need an outlet.

What is your relationship with the emotion?

I've found that this year is the angriest year I've ever had, but I'd say I rarely get very angry even still - I've just been dealing with a few things this year (see other journal).

What would it look like if someone was really good at managing their anger?

They direct their anger in the right direction. Sometimes people can lash out at those who don't deserve it because they're hurting.

Self-confidence is the first step to success.

How did you get over your previous embarrassments?

I remember in 9th grade, I got up to present something in history and I was shaking like a leaf. My teacher even brought it up in conferences with my parents because it was that noticeable. As I've gotten older though, I've gotten far more confident in myself. I've realized that no one cares as much as I think they do. My heartrate still goes up when I have to present something, but for the most part I am cool, calm, and collected.

Toni Cade Bambara 3/26: We did not have the group discussion (whoops) but I can answer two questions.

How does Toni Cade distinguish the Seventies from the Sixties? What, if any parallels, can be drawn to the present moment?

I think she felt that the seventies were years for introspection and transformation, whereas the sixties were more for overt and obvious activism and confrontation. Marches and manifestos went on through the sixties, while in the seventies people shifted to quieter, personal focuses on self-organization.

I can see some parallels to the present moment in how protests and activism are handled. There are big events, of course, but they're blended with quieter efforts through digital media and smaller-scale organization. We've done a good job of balancing viisible action with subtle efforts to achieve transformation.

Do you agree that that refocusing to the self is fundamental for transformation of society? Why or why not? What would be a tangible example of this kind of labor?

Yes I agree because people need self-confidence, self-awareness, and personal accountability to dedicate themselves to a cause greater than themselves. A tangible example of this kind of labor is genuinely analyzing your own personal implicit biases through surrounding yourself with ideas/people that challenge you.

I don't have an official one yet, but the draft is: Both Alice Walker's The Color Purple and Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" argue that reclaiming identity is an intensely personal act and also a revolutionary political act. It is the most vital step in contesting the systemic injustices that have devalued Black femininity.
