Week of April 13
Hi Tigers! Mr. Arena here!
Back before Spring break, I and many other HISD teachers were given a bike for their campus to create an "Art Bike" for the Houston Art Bike Parade.
Sadly, the Art Bike Parade in May has been cancelled. HOWEVER, you can still design your own art bike! And with your parent's permission and help, decorate your real bike. Start by imagining. What would YOUR bike look like? Look at a few examples of actual art bikes.
Then, draw, color or paint a picture of your art bike with whatever materials you have at home. Use the Elements of Art (there are 7) that you have learned about this year: Line,Shape, Color, etc.
Save your creations. I would love to see them when we are able to get back together. Meanwhile I will be working on that Travis Art Bike! Miss you guys, stay safe!

Hope everyone enjoyed the art bike activity. I have been working on the actual bike at home and I want to share some pics of the progress.
Since we ARE the Travis Tigers, I just had to make a Tiger bike.
The big challenge was finding the right material to make the tiger's head. Since I LOVE to use recycled stuff(junk?) whenever possible, I ended up cutting up a used air conditioner filter as an ARMATURE (frame). It has fabric covering the wire netting inside which I shaped into the FORM of a tigers head.
Then the fun part, painting the DETAILS of the tigers face. Check out the pictures!

Go to the ARTIST column and Look at the examples of faces done in the SURREALIST style by: Thomas Fedro, Jim Warren, and Mr. Arena.
Use the SEE,THINK, WONDER technique to describe your reaction to any or all of the works.
Then, with the knowledge and skills you gained in the previous activity (how to draw the human face), draw a basic face .Remember to draw very lightly so that you can change the size, and position of the the features to suit YOUR imagination.
The idea is to create a world that could exist only in dreams or fantasy. That is what the SURREALISTS tried to do in their art. Please use whatever materials you have , whether pencil, crayons, markers or paint. Have Fun!

When we are feeling a certain EMOTION, our FEELING shows on our face. That is called a FACIAL EXPRESSION. Our EYES, MOUTH, and even our NOSE help to show what we are feeling. Artists and Illustrators use facial expressions to show us what their subjects are feeling and give them more character.
ACTIVITY: Look in a mirror and see how many expressions your face is able to show.
Use the work sheet (or draw your own head and face shapes) to practice drawing different expressions. Start with pencils, then add color with crayon. markers. or paint. There may be a few that are not on the worksheet! You can add them also! Oh by the way, Mother's Day is coming up! How about an Expressive Portrait or Self Portrait to brighten up her Day?
