On this day twenty two diggers and five soldiers died. After the fight the soldiers then pulled down the Southern Cross flag. Miners were sick of having to pay every month for a licence if they were caught  they would be tied to a bog until they paid five pounds. If you did not pay the five pounds you would be taken to prison. So they got together at a meeting and burned there licenses. But that did not make it any better.
