He is best known for his works Democracy in America (appearing in two volumes, 1835 and 1840) and The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856). In both, he analysed the improved living standards and social conditions of individuals as well as their relationship to the market and state in Western societies. Democracy in America was published after Tocqueville's travels in the United States and is today considered an early work of sociology and political science. He noted that the theories which Joseph Arthur de Gobineau was talking about were dangerous for ‘human freedom’, as events like the Holocaust sadly show.

Watch this short video about Tocqueville’s work and make notes about the key factos:

Joseph Arthur de Gobineau was a French aristocrat who is best known for helping to legitimise racism by the use of scientific racist theory and "racial demography", and for developing the theory of the Aryan master race. Inspiring a social movement in Germany named Gobinism, his works were also influential on prominent antisemites like Richard Wagner, and leaders of the Nazi Party. His Essai sur l’inégalité des races humaines, 4 vol. (1853–55; Essay on the Inequality of Human Races), that was by far his most influential work.

Rhodes believed that the Anglo-Saxon race was, to quote a letter of 1877, 'the first race in the world'. Under the reasoning that 'the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race', he advocated vigorous settler colonialism and ultimately a reformation of the British Empire so that each component would be self-governing and represented in a single parliament in London. In recent times, the protest movement ‘Rhodes Must Fall’ has called for his statues to be taken down with references made to apartheid in South Africa.

Cecil Rhodes

The Middle Passage was the stage of the triangular trade in which millions of Africans were forcibly transported to the New World as part of the Atlantic slave trade. Ships departed Europe for African the markets with manufactured goods, which were traded for purchased or kidnapped Africans, who were transported across the Atlantic as slaves; the enslaved Africans were then sold or traded for raw materials, which would be transported back to Europe to complete the voyage. One key event in this period which was critical in bringing about the abolition of slavery was ‘the Zong’ which it is believed also inspired artist Turner to paint ‘The Slave Ship’.

Watch this short clip about the Middle Passage to find out more:

In 1781, the captain of a slave ship inbound to Jamaica, the Zong, had ordered 132 slaves to be thrown overboard when drinking water was running low so that insurance payments could be collected; slaves who died of natural causes were not covered by insurance. This incident went to court, and the trial that ensued gained wide public attention, building support for the abolition of slavery. Although the trial was deemed to be inconclusive, it was a pivotal catalyst in the movement towards British abolition and a moment that later inspired Turner to portray the incident in The Slave Ship.
