Millions of American women give birth every year, and nearly a “third of them will have some kind of pregnancy-related complication” (P.g 10). Its very important to start prenatal care as early as possible — ideally, “before a woman even becomes pregnant” (P.g 10). The sooner in pregnancy good care begins, the better for the health of both moms and their babies.

Smoking – It’s not only bad for you, but bad for your baby as well. Smoking during pregnancy “reduces the amount of oxygen that the baby receives” and “increases the risk of miscarriage, bleeding, and morning sickness” (P.g 10). It could also lead the baby to have reduced birth weight, premature birth, increased risk of SIDS, and stillbirth. Pregnant women should also avoid second hand smoke.

Alcohol – Drinking can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, including symptoms like “low birth weight, medical problems, and behavior abnormalities” (P.g 10).

Caffeine – The FDA warns against caffeine consumption during pregnancy because it has shown to “affect fetal heart rates and awake time” (P.g 11). Caffeine can also increase risk of stretch marks.

Drugs & Herbal Remedies – Always be careful about drugs or herbal remedies that aren’t prescribed by a doctor. These substances may affect the development of your unborn child.

Nutrition – Good nutrition is crucial to a developing child, particularly getting enough folic acid. Lack of folic acid can cause birth defects. Leafy “vegetables, orange juice, and beans are some natural sources of folic acid” and many stores sell vitamins with folic acid (P.g 11).

Exercise – Moderate exercise is helpful as it improves the mother’s mental state and can increase oxygen flow to the fetus. However, don’t overdo it because high intensity workouts cam negatively impact the pregnancy.

Prenatal Care – Regular doctor visits are important to your baby’s development because the body undergoes many changes during pregnancy. Regular monitoring by a professional will “help ensure that your baby will be born healthy” (P.g 11).

Multiple sex partners – Can increase risk of STD’s

Exposure to chemicals - Wash your vegetables and fruits to rid them of any left over pesticides or dirt!

Teenage pregnancy affects the family of the teen and baby, also the teens don’t have a “life built up to support a baby”, so they often need the help of those around them (P.g 11). Examples would be informal community support, such as babysitting or hand-me-down baby essentials. These parents also usually need help from the local, state or federal government agencies in the form of “food stamps or housing assistance” (P.g 12)

My aunt was pregnant with my cousin, and she had a lot of behavioral changes due to the hormones, she used to drink a lot of coffee, and she always used to drink at least 2 cups a day. She had to break from her habits once she had gotten pregnant since it would’ve been harmful to the baby, but due to her suddenly stopping she had a lot of migraines. Thus the doctor recommended cutting back the dosage of caffeine intake everyday. My aunt held strong and quit her addiction all together and my cousin came out looking beautiful and healthy as ever.
