Where we noticed it: With the veil. P. 281 "Thus, from beneath the black veil,... could never reach him." 
How it worked:  It worked by showing how the veil was a shield from normal things in life. How it was used to hide just his face, but as seen as something so much more.

The Veil is a symbol of the dark side of human nature.

Where we noticed it: Pg.274: "...further than to give a darkened aspect to all living and inanimate things."

How it adds to the story: builds upon the Character of Mr. Hooper.

2nd Device noticed: Diction

First noticed on P.273 in the first paragraph, "the sexton began to toll the bell, keeping his eye on the reverend Mr. Hooper's door. The first glimpse of the clergyman's figure was the signal for the bell to cease its summons.

This puts into perspective the type of author and what time period he lived in.

How it worked/What it added: Gives an idea of the main character, and it helps create an image for the audience.

Where we noticed it: P. 284 "The grass of many years has sprung up and withered on the grave, the burial stone is moss-grown, and good Mr. Hooper's face is dust."
How it worked/What it added:  It sets a tone, and provides a visual for the audience.
