         <description><![CDATA[<div>1st Device Noticed:&nbsp; symbolism<br><br>The Veil is a symbol of the dark side of human nature.<br><br>Where we noticed it: Pg.274: "...further than to give a darkened aspect to all living and inanimate things."<br><br>How it adds to the story: builds upon the Character of Mr. Hooper.<br><br>2nd Device noticed: Diction<br><br>First noticed on P.273 in the first paragraph,  "the sexton began to toll the bell, keeping his eye on the reverend Mr. Hooper's door. The first glimpse of the clergyman's figure was the signal for the bell to cease its summons. <br><br>This puts into perspective the type of author and what time period he lived in.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

"Never! It cannot be!" replied Mr.Hooper<br><br>What this rhetorical device is, is that it symbolizes the veil as in being the sins of the people around him. So therefore, nobody feels comfortable around him. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1st Device Noticed: Characterization (Direct)<br>Where we noticed: P. 274 "Mr. Hooper, a gentlemanly person, of about thirty, though still a bachelor, was dressed with due clerical neatness, as if a careful wife had starched his band, and brushed the weekly dust from his Sunday's garb."<br>How it worked/What it added: Gives an idea of the main character, and it helps create an image for the audience.<br><br>2nd Device Noticed: Imagery&nbsp;<br>Where we noticed it: P. 284 "The grass of many years has sprung up and withered on the grave, the burial stone is moss-grown, and good Mr. Hooper's face is dust."<br>How it worked/What it added: &nbsp;It sets a tone, and provides a visual for the audience. He creates feeling using imagery. </div>]]></description>
