Learning so much in my first ECED class has given me so many more ideas and approaches that I have already begun to implement in my class.                                                                    This has been so applicable during these past weeks, with the change of Columbus Day to Indigenous People Day and Thanksgiving, and how to present these holidays now. I invited a parent who is Native American to do a presentation before we had Thanksgiving break. She is a jingle-dress dancer and brought her dress, a fringed shawl, and children’s moccasins. She also taught the children how to say thank you in Dakota.          I approach this time of the year intertwining all holidays with the theme of light. We started in November with Diwali, with some families who observe, sharing treats with the children.   I have spent the last week teaching about Hannukah (which I celebrate) with menorahs for children to put candles in as a hands-on activity and a tray of different dreidels-a great fine motor activity as well. We had art projects with a Hannukah theme. We also talked about Kwanzaa, the traditions, reasons for the celebration, and hands-on projects including art. We share what each does in their home and how it is great how we each do our traditions or none at all.                    In the coming weeks, before winter break, we will travel the world talking about how winter holidays are celebrated throughout the world. We will study the places on the map, traditions including food and art, and Winter Solstice. 

I will make naeyc’s 4 - goals of anti-biased education part of my daily lesson plans:

1.       IDENTITY – to support children to be proud of who they are without anyone having to feel above anyone else – we are all equal. 
2.       DIVERSITY – to help children learn the proper language to articulate who they are and who others are sameness and differences. To teach children how we are all different and all the same.
3.       JUSTICE – teaching empathy and fairness. Understanding stereotyping of themselves and others and knowing if they are fair or unfair.
4.       ACTIVISM – help children gain the tools and ability to stand up for things that are unfair and biased and learn conflict resolution skills.
