State Language Standard(s) [ELPS]: Intermediate ELLs have the ability to understand simple, high-frequency spoken English used in routine academic and social settings. 

Content Objective(s)*: SWBAT understand the history of Hinduism and Buddhism.

Language Objective(s): [SWBAT + Blooms verb + language target + means/strategy] SWBAT summarize in writing how one achieves enlightenment in Hinduism or Buddhism.

Vocabulary: 

1. Atman: is the universal, eternal self, of which each individual soul (jiva or jiva-atman) partakes
2. Moksha: the transcendent state attained as a result of being released from the cycle of rebirth.
3. Reincarnation: a person or animal in whom a particular soul is believed to have been reborn.
4. Karma: the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences.
5. Dharma: the eternal and inherent nature of reality, regarded in Hinduism as a cosmic law underlying right behavior and social order.
6. Ahimsa: respect for all living things and avoidance of violence toward others.
7. Castes: is a class structure that is determined by birth
8. Siddhartha Gautama: The prince who created Hinduism and became Buddha
9. Four Noble Truths: the four central beliefs containing the essence of Buddhist teaching.
10. Eightfold Path: the path to nirvana, comprising eight aspects in which an aspirant must become practiced: right views, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration.
11. Nirvana: a transcendent state in which there is neither suffering, desire, nor sense of self, and the subject is released from the effects of karma and the cycle of death and rebirth. It represents the final goal of Buddhism.
12. Sects: a group of people with somewhat different religious beliefs from those of a larger group to which they belong.

Instructional Materials and Resources*: PowerPoint, Fill-in-the-blank Notes, Discussion question

Description of Instructional Strategies* and Learning Tasks*:

1. Opening Activity & Objective(s) Introduction: Students will be asked if they know anything about the history of Hinduism or Buddhism. After a short class discussion, we will go over the objectives to make sure the students know what will be going on for the day.
2. Detailed Outline of Instructional Strategies and Expectations for Learning Tasks: Students will be given a fill-in-the-blank notes sheet for them to fill out during the lesson. The students will watch a short video about who Budda was and how Buddhism came to be.
3. Lesson Closure & Objective(s) Review: Students will have a discussion question that they will need to answer before leaving class. Objectives will be on the last slide of the PowerPoint, we will go over them to make sure we went over them.

Differentiation for All Learners: Larger Font, Missing words are underlined that will be needed for fill-in-the-blank notes. Additional time to complete assignments, Student-specific accommodations will be given to the students who have accommodations needed, like ELLs
