We discussed including advertisements in our news extract in between sections.

Javi suggested to have someone be in a certain place where there is bad weather and report the situation from there. We initially declined the idea democratically, since we were not entirely convinced.

Santi wanted to be in charge of producing music.

Javi brought the idea of emulating a programme called “Aquí la Tierra” forth. We weren’t acquainted with the programme but as he explained it, we thought it might be a good idea

We decided that, since the weather section entails a smaller amount of workload, one person would be sufficient to take care of that area of the project. However, we all agreed on the fact that we should not divide the project sections between the team members to have them work separately on different sections, but rather have everyone be involved in everything so that we can really work towards a common goal and a “unified-looking” project. In spite of that, we would assign different areas to different team members so that each individual would make sure that his assigned part was moving forward.

Initially, we agreed upon having Teresa be in charge of the weather section, Javi be in charge of the curious facts section, Dani and me be in charge of breaking news. Teresa was very specific about being in charge of video editing and wanting to be a reporter in windy and rainy weather and editing the video so as to have instant change sceneries and wardrobe changes, which we all thought would be really cool additions to the weather forecast section.

Upon discussion between Dani and Santi, who thought they would do well working together, the workload distribution was changed to:

Javi and Laura→ Breaking news (one of the two being a reporter)

Dani and Teresa→ video editing

Dani and Santi→ Curious facts

Teresa→ Weather forecast

Upon the end of the lesson, the distribution is not final but it is not an important issue, since we decided that having everyone work on everything will be value added to the project.

We thought that we could include the following news in the Breaking News segment:
- Yahoo secretly monitored emails on behalf of the U.S. goverment.
The script for this news segment could be something like the following: "We have recently received information regarding a breach in US citizens. It looks like Yahoo created, as of last year, a secret custom-made programme designed to search all of Yahoo users emails for specific information, being requested by US intelligence officials. We have received intel on this topic because of two former employees who knew about that on-going project. Here's what we know at the moment: Millions of Yahoo mails have been scanned at the request of government institutions like the NSA (National Security Agency) and the FBI. This would then be the first known case of an internet service agreeing to offer surveillance to a spy agency (...)"
This piece of news was particularly interesting for the breaking news section as it is specially shocking and includes worrying information which would be credible to have been found out while the news delivery is being done. We think that this news' content is very engaging and the viewers would probably be eager to find out about this news content as it is a severe violation of our first generation human rights (privacy).
-Sexually aggressive remarks made by Donald Trump in 2005 surface and the Republican Party descends into a state of chaos.
After a 2005 recording, where Donald Trump says lewd comments about women, came to light, Trump answers "100%" to the question of whether or not he plans to stay in race. Mike Pence (Indiana governor and Donald Trump's running mate) has said to be "offended" by these recording and has canceled a political event where he would represent him on Saturday. Republicans who used to endorse Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for the White House are starting to pull away.
This piece of news is quite scandalous as Donald Trump could be very close to being the President of the US and the revelation of that recording should have a very negative impact on his voters (or at least his female voters), as it seems unacceptable that a US candidate for Presidency could be caught saying things like those he said. However, if we needed to cut this segment short, the best way of doing so would be by eliminating this piece of news, because if we look at the long-term view of this project, this piece of news would probably be uninteresting as the US elections will have already been done.
-Immunotherapy cancer drug hailed as 'game changer'
A combination of Nivolumab and ipilimumab, reduces tumour size significantly on patients with advanced kidney cancer.
This piece of news is very interesting and of high importance in the medical world so it would probably play out well in the Breaking News segment.
South Korea reveals plan to assassinate Kim Jong Un.
It has been recently discovered that South Korea has laid out a plan to assassinate Kim Jong Un if the country feels threatened by North Korean nuclear weapons. Han Min-koo has just admitted to having such a plan, when asked about it in Parliament. The plan apparently involves using missiles to target strategic North Korean facilities and also eliminate Kim Jong Un. It was suspected that this plan existed, but South Korea's President's candor has surprised everyone, as no one thought the government would ever admit to having such plans.

We decided to choose this piece of news in the end because we figured out it is is important for people to be aware of this situation and being this topic as interesting and "juicy" as it is, it could probably do well in the breaking news section and properly engage the viewer, catching their attention.
Usually this segment includes last minute news, but in our case the news will not be last minute as we will be transmitting them when we finalize the project the news will already have passed. We do know, however, that the news that we use for this segment will have to be juicy, shocking and maybe crime related and the content will have to look almost improvised. We think that it would be a good idea to keep the chosen news but be on the lookout for more interesting news that would play better as "breaking news"
This three pieces of news should be spread in different moments throughout the duration of the BNC news emission, popping up at a given moment where the news suppossedly came to light.
The reason why we chose the news that are described in this text box, and decided not to choose the other ones we found was mainly because we realised that these were the only ones that would play well as breaking news, whereas the other ones are not the kind of news, that news agencies find out throughout the duration of their news programmes.

Donald Trump also threatened that if tapes of him saying inappropriate things were going to be released, he would say the inappropriate things Bill and Hillary Clinton said.

We finally decided against using this idea as we believed it would not play well with the concept of “Breaking News” which would basically entail having news that have been freshly been found out about, and these types of news about campaign rallies are usually events that the public knows about weeks before the event takes place, so it is not exactly the kind of news that would be displayed in a section like this in your typical news programme.

<del>US, South Korean missile destroyers in fresh show of force to North Korea.</del>

Source: CNN

In response to North Korea’s nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles testing, the US and South Korea’s navies have decided to “display their military might” by showing the US guided missile destroyer, join ships, submarines and planes on the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula. Unfortunately, the latest information shows that a South Korean helicopter with three passengers has crashed into the sea. This is the first time the US and South Korea have operated so close to the eastern coast of North Korea, even though it was a joint drill. The US and South Korea have created an alliance to defend themselves against North Korea’s acts of aggression.

This may well be one of the news that we use because of several reasons: it is interesting, fairly unknown to the public and it could play really well as breaking news, specially when it comes to the information concerning the crash of one of the helicopter. It is really important that the public knows about the US collaborating with South Korea against the threat posed by Kim Jong Un. We feel it is important that with this news we underline the fact that even if this was just a joint drill, the significance of this action is undeniable as it confirms the alliance between the US and South Korean military force against North Korea and the imminent threat of a war.

South Korea reveals plan to assassinate Kim Jong Un.

Source: CNN

It has been recently discovered that South Korea has laid out a plan to assassinate Kim Jong Un if the country feels threatened by North Korean nuclear weapons. Han Min-koo has just admitted to having such a plan, when asked about it in Parliament. The plan apparently involves using missiles to target strategic North Korean facilities and also eliminate Kim Jong Un. It was suspected that this plan existed, but South Korea's President's candor has surprised everyone, as no one thought the government would ever admit to having such plans.

This could also be one of the news that we wind up including in the breaking news section, because of the same reasons we like the previous one for this section: it's shocking and could play well as a piece of news that has been recently found out about. However. we should only choose one of the two as they both focus on similar topics and having two of them in the same section could be quite repetitive.

<del>Charlotte shooting (we weren’t entirely convinced with this idea).</del>

Source: New York Times

We ended up deciding against this idea because it didn't correlate with the time-line we have set for the breaking news section, and it is a topic that has already been discussed in the news, in-depth.

<del>For Taiwan, Google Images of Disputed Island are Too Clear</del>

Source: The New York Times

An Island being disputed by four countries, which is located on the South China Sea, is shown by Google Images with way too much detail. Apparently, the Google Images satellite view has been able to capture the island new military installations, which are antiaircraft gun blockhouse towers bigger than the existing ones in the island. Taiwan has asked Google to blur said images.

This piece of news seemed really interesting to us but we were not sure about how it would play out as a piece of breaking news

PHASE 3 (17/10/16-18/10/16)

First of all, we decided on how we would distribute the time we have between the sections that our team is responsible for. We have 12 minutes to dedicate to this part (as our team has 5 members) of the news and we will distribute that time in the following way:

Breaking News: 4 minutes

Weather: 3 minutes

Curious facts: 5 minutes

Here are the final decisions we made on the different sections this group is in charge of:

BREAKING NEWS: We are considering reducing the amount of Breaking News to three, because more than that would probably be too much and we would go over the ten minute limit. There will be three pieces of news for this section.

Upon discussion with the team we decided that we should choose:

South Korea reveals plan to assassinate Kim Jong Un.

→ It would definitely be a good idea to have one reporter in the South Korean Parliament (we could use the green screen to create the illusion that we are actually in that Parliament where the South Korean President admitted to having a plan to kill Kim Jong Un.

→ Information guideline for the reporter: It has been recently discovered that South Korea has laid out a plan to assassinate Kim Jong Un if the country feels threatened by North Korean nuclear weapons. Daniel Pinkston of Troy University said that a President would always want to have that option, and not training for it and having that capability in case the country feels threatened, would definitely be a mistake. What does not come as a surprise is the fact that North Korea is preparing to defend itself as North Korea warned on March of this year, in response to joint US and South Korean military exercises, that they could make a “preemptive and offensive nuclear strike”. Pyongyang actually issued a long statement including the following:” Time will prove how the crime-woven history of the U.S. imperialists who have grown corpulent through aggression and war will come to an end and how the Park Geun Hye group's disgraceful remaining days will meet a miserable doom as it is keen on the confrontation with the fellow countrymen in the north.” After this statement and following the claims made by North Korea’s leadership concerning a successful nuclear test of a nuclear warhead, South Korea has increased its statements confronting North Korea’s leadership.

Option A for 2nd piece of news: Yahoo secretly monitored emails on behalf of the US government

→ Information that could be used for the delivery of this piece of news: The script for this news segment could be something like the following: "We have recently received information regarding a breach in US citizens. It looks like Yahoo created, as of last year, a secret custom-made programme designed to search all of Yahoo users emails for specific information, being requested by US intelligence officials. We have received intel on this topic because of two former employees and a third person who knew about that on-going project. Here's what we know at the moment: Millions of Yahoo mails have been scanned at the request of government institutions like the NSA (National Security Agency) and the FBI. This would then be the first known case of an internet service agreeing to offer surveillance to a spy agency (...)"

Yahoo released a brief statement in response to the questions being asked and said: “Yahoo is a law abiding company, and complies with the laws of the United States. However, Yahoo declined offering further information or comment and revelations made by Edward Snowden show that Yahoo was subjecting US citizens to mass surveillance. If this is proven to be accurate it would be unconstitutional as it is in clear violation of US Constitution’s fourth ammendment.

Option B for 2nd piece of news: Trump: “Zero chance I’ll quit”

This news segment would be included as a follow up to the piece of news about Trump’s recording saying lewd comments about women was released and could be delivered by a reporter located in Trump Tower.

. Donald Trump vowed never to drop out of the presidential race after a growing number of members of the GOP and Republicans urged him to do so, after the sexually aggressive remarks he made on 2005 came to light. He spent the entire afternoon in Trump Tower consulting with his advisors and when he came up, he was greeted by a mass of supporters who were waiting for him at the entrance, and after waving at them, shaking several hands and pumping a fist in the air, he came back in Trump Tower. When asked whether he planned to stay in the race, Trump simply answered: 100%. Meanwhile, The third-most powerful Senate Republican, John Thune, a member of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's inner circle, urged Trump to withdraw from the race, in favour of Mike Pence, who is currently Trump’s running mate. Arizona Sen. John McCain, GOP’s 2008 nominee, announced he won't vote for Trump. Mike Pence (Indiana governor and Donald Trump's running mate) has said to be "offended" by these recording and has canceled a political event where he would represent him on Saturday. Republicans who used to endorse Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for the White House are starting to pull away.

We are not sure if we are going to include the Yahoo piece of news, as we need to discuss with the other group that has this same piece of news.

We thought that maybe we could discuss with the other group having our group introduce the topic as a piece of breaking news in the middle of the news delivery and then have the other group do a follow up on that news segment later on.

We have included one of our rejected ideas as a backup in case after phase 4, which is the phase where the team leaders will discuss how they are going to organise the different sections in our class’ whole news delivery, we end up scrapping the idea we mentioned previously.

Sexually aggressive remarks made by Donald Trump in 2005 surface and the Republican Party descends into a state of chaos.

Donald Trump boasted about kissing, groping and trying to have sexual relations with women in a microphone-recorded conversation he had in 2005 with Billy Bush, who was then in “Access Hollywood” on a bus with the show’s name written across the side. He stated that: “when you are a star, they let you do it”.

We have decided that we would end up using the idea of having the breaking news interrupt the whole news delivery so that they would make a greater impact on the viewers.

CURIOUS FACTS:
We decided we should change this section's name to "What The Fact?", as we thought that it would be catchier and would really grab the viewers attention.
We thought of rejecting the Harry's Potter new film and change it to a new section, Future talents, where we would interview The Big Blind, a new Spanish musician.
Each new may take a minute long plus the interviews (a total of three news and two interviews, equals 4 minutes)
-Rats with pants

Ig Nobel prize, not the official Nobel prize, is a science prize awarded to people who made investigations that make you laugh at first but can also make you think, as they are actual investigations directed with a set purpose. He used cotton, polyester and wool (and a combination of the different textiles). The results showcased that polyester reduced the sexual activity rate in male rats significantly.

We are creating different isolated news scripts for the different news segments that we have for the breaking news section and a bigger script which has a normal timeline for the rest of the sections.
We had difficulties at first figuring this out because the breaking news section timing has to be decided upon discussion with the other team leaders at the end of this phase.
PROJECT OVERVIEW: Laura Estallo Guijarro

When one creates a concept and has an inkling of what the final product that is going to come out of the project might be, the initial attitude towards it is always that of excitement and anticipation. Despite having those feelings, it is essential that the preconceived ideas in our minds never make us cloud our judgement and lose touch with the reality of the course of events that a project like the one we have worked on during this year takes.

For the siring of this news programme, we were meant to foresee the possible problems that were likely to come up throughout the process of elaboration, a seemingly uncomplicated task which turned out to be an arduous challenge for the classroom as a whole. Being unfamiliar with any comparable projects, none of uswere able to comprehend the magnitude of the assignment at hand, which was at its birth perceived as an enriching experience all of us could benefit from at a time in our lives where English as a subject did not pose as big of a threat as it used to in previous years. One of our heftiest unanticipated issues, was ironically the amount of trouble that began to bubble up throughout the conception of this project, and at the same time it was what we all learnt the most from, as being able to deal with those unprecedented problems is most definitely an advantageous skill to have in life.

The phases of the project successfully fulfilled the part of guiding us through a very elaborate process of script writing which entailed a massive amount of creative work. An important misconception that we had during said step was that recording the news programme and the creation of the script were separate procedures, as we obliterated the fact that everything we wrote had to be said in front of a camera and understood by an audience. Many of the written segments sounded unnatural and plastic when read to the camera, since our effort during the creation of the script was putting our best written work forward, when our objective, had we acknowledged this issue, should have been to compose a dynamic spoken piece.

Teamwork was an intricate part of this project. The beauty of designating different roles to members in each group was that it very much resembles the different job posts that one might have in the future. Nevertheless, the way in which the roles that each person was appointed with ended up paralleling the mental ideas that we all have of one another was troubling, as it externalized and formalized those roles that we unknowingly and unhibitedly give to each other on a daily basis. In spite of that, it is undeniable that these roles had the upside of enabling people who were interested in the project to rise to the occassion and contribute with all they had. Did these accreditations make for an uneven distribution of work? Maybe. Undoubtedly it is a situation we are all very familiar with, but given that it factors how each of our personalities are, it would be difficult to ascribe this permanent issue to the delegation of roles.

This project, in my opinion, has both, good and bad aspects. For the good aspects, the project itself is a good idea where we could keep our level of English and we had lots of fun while recording (at least for the What the Fact section).
For the bad aspects, it's a project for another school year. Second Bach is a very demanding year and this project, the first phases were extremely detailed, making it hard and very time-consuming, using a time that maybe we could have used to improve Selectividad's exam.
In my opinion, in order to improve it for the following years, it shouldn't be so demanding. The gathering of the information and the news shouldn't be so exhausting and detailed (all the descriptions, the reasons why we choose it and we discard a news, a summary of whatever we do...). Just with a little research, and easier script and a recording, the project would have ended the same way but it would have been more entertaining and not so arduous.

MY PERSONAL OPINION ON THIS YEAR’S PROJECT_Javier Calatrava 2ºBACHb

It has been clear since the beginning of the curse (when the project was presented to the class) the amount of work and enthusiasm put into its design. I could see how you, Dina, studied the project and even planned every detail, every phase, and made sure of the availability of the means to make it happen in the practice, after the summer break.

If the project has not sorted out as expected is due to some issues that not every time could have been avoided, such as the unavailability of the computer-room or the lack of personal computers between the members of the class.

However, I think it would be wise to notice that, as it always happens when something new is attempted, some mistakes were committed given that it's a very hard task to have every detail in consideration. My point is that some mistakes are just an unavoidable side effect of starting something up. But, most of them could have been avoided if you had had in consideration the class’s experience on this type of project. I'm not saying that we know more about them than you teachers do but we definitely have a different vision angle on them. Please understand how we have been working on similar projects (maybe in a minor scale) since primary school and consequently we have had many opportunities to specialise on them. You teachers plan the conceptual project, let's call it task; but it is us the students who actually perform it by taking it into the practice. What I mean is that you see the results, we see how they were achieved, and that is not strictly following the phases that a teacher might expect from its “far” point of view. For instance, I believe that dividing the project in phases was intended to help to carry it out. On the contrary it only forces us to follow more rules rather than letting us work in the way each person believes to be the most efficient and in general easier to them.

To me for example, it was obvious since the very beginning the huge amount of time it would be needed to develop this project. I could see myself stressed out in the weekends trying to deal with both exams and tons homework (inevitably a reality this course) and the added task of this project. Not to mention the usual mistake that teachers tend to fall into: lessons assigned to work in projects are in EVERY case extremely inefficient. For some reason students cannot take the most out of them, not by far; those lessons result in waste of time.

I must recognise that it didn’t sort out so excessive as we did just one of them for the entire course (I thought that it would be one per term) so at the end it has not been bad at all.

In conclusion I’d say that this is a very dynamic and creative project, it makes english lessons far more entertaining. However it is not joy what we search for this year, not if that implies spending on them too much time, as you know we would rather concentrate in the marks. On the other hand I would recommend to have it done in 1ºbach. At that age students are mature enough and have the knowledge to carry out an ambitious project like this. In fact, I would plan to have done one of this “TV programmes” per term, with the adjustment of not making them so lengthy and time-consuming (simplifying/eliminating the phases or having them just as guides would surely help).

As I can considere myself some kind of artist, I much more kin on doing artistic projects, or those ones that, although they are much more long and laborious, their final result really makes you feel proud of them because of their beauty. But unfortunately, this year the thing we miss the most isn’t anything else but time, so sadly to say, I didn’t enjoyed the task as much as I could have done a few years before.

I personally think that the idea of making an acceptable news program purely built by students is an incredible idea, but it would be perfect for a little bit younger people, not because of their age but because of their freedom.

Another thing I didn’t like at all about it was the fact that we had to post any tiny detail in the Puddlet, which I considere excessive and actually useless. What I would purpose in fact will be to make a weekly, or maybe monthly, talk between all the students to add ideas, comment other ones and decide changes, kind of what we used to do the reporter’s day but deleting all the Puddlet part.

And well, after all the negative points, I must say that I had a great time preparing, recording and also writing the script in order to make it as best as posible And, how not,, making the little pieces of music for the video, what have challenged me to be able to perfectly imite a real news soundtrack, and with not so bad results :).

As a final point, I think that the final video its going to be glorious.
