Solar energy works one of two ways, first solar energy is captured through solar cells and converted to electricity similar to how plants capture the sun and process it through photosynthesis. Another way is to capture its heat, this is called solar-thermal electricity. Solar energy is concentrated onto a receiver that converts the light into heat that boils water. The steam turns an turbine that turns it into electricity.

Arizona as many know is very sunny. We are sunny 300 days of the year and rarely do we have a truly cloudy day. The cost to install these may be a high price at first. but in as little as ten years, a homeowner will generate enough electricity to give power back to the company and get paid for it as well. Talk about a return on your investment!

The Students are going to find different ways nature recycles life to create other forms of energy for new organisms! for example dead plant life is decomposed and turns into Humus, which supplies nutrients for more plants to grow. Students can research and discover other ways nature takes its course on renewing energy, then i would connect how nature does it to how humans renew energy and waste to produce more energy. One way is to have students create their own solar energy test using the method of solar-thermal electricity.

Students will be given two cans, one black, the other silver. They will have thermometers in the can and the can will be filled with water. Students will test these cans out in the sun to see how hot the water gets after 20 minutes in the sun and record its data to see which one gets hotter and compare it to systems that are in place like this today. we can vary the assignment by having students put cold water in the can and see if it heats up faster than if it had just luke warm water.
