In the text it say's  "Beatty switched the green bullet off and thrust it in his pocket. "Well--so there's more here than I thought. I saw you tilt your head, listening. First I thought you had a Seashell. But when you turned clever later, I wondered. We'll trace this and drop it on your friend."  I think at this point the best option that montag had was to in fact kill Captain Beatty. If he had this, Captain Beatty would be more likely to listen to Montag’s opinion and maybe even agree to disagree, but because Montag did not have this and did not have anything in his favor, if he had tried talking it out with him, Captain Beatty would be very unlikely to truly listen to him and would view him as a threat easy to get rid of. But I don’t necessarily agree that Montag could of taken him hostage. I don’t think it would of done much good for Montag, in fact I think it would just put him in an even more dire situation. With the Mechanical Hound in the near distance while they are talking, it would of put a much larger weight on Montag’s back if he took Captain Beatty with him. This would make it easier for the Hound to track them both and would just slow Montag down. I also don’t believe it would make much of a difference to the government if he took Captain Beatty because they do not hesitate to try to kill Montag, a fireman, and many other civilians when burning down they’re homes so they seem to not have a great value for life. This means that Captain Beatty being taken would be a small problem for them but not something of great concern. When Montag kills Captain Beatty, the Mechanical Hound reacts very quickly. The people in this society aren’t very educated on the past and if it began with some at first realizing they didn’t want to live this way and this idea spread, he could have built a following big enough to make a difference in the government. But I think that if Montag could have succeeded in taking Beatty hostage it would help them tremendously because he is the leader of  all the firemen and if he were forced to stop the firemen then the books would also be able to survive and the problem would be cut off at the source. The firemen trust Beatty and would most likely agree with him because they live in a world where they don't create their own opinions and their judgement is so clouded because or how evident censorship is. If all the firemen were convinced to be in favor of books then the firemen could then convince the citizens to also be in favor of books. In this book, Montag values his own beliefs and human lives more than his neighbors. Earlier in the book Montag was faced with the decision of burning the books and killing the woman that was guarding the books. He ultimately chose to burn the books and killing the woman but he hesitated because he has value for books and human life. In the case of this topic,  Montag kills Captain Beatty instead of trying to keep him alive and work the problems out. Both examples show how Montag regards his beliefs and human lives higher than most people do. We also chose this question because it makes you think about the society that Montag lives in, and how people act and live differently in the time period of the future. People in this time were so censored by the higher authorities that they didn't feel for themselves and they didn't value human lives. There are some people like Montag who do have their own opinions and value human life, why Montag felt guilty and anxious after he killed Beatty.
