For my abstraction assignment, I decided to go for lilies. The original photo were multiple lilies surrounded by leaves and stems, however I wanted my painting to represent more of a pond and focused on two lilies.

For my non-representational image, I chose almost the same colors as my abstract image. Instead of having the entire background green, I decided to put small chunks of green to present the “leaves and stems.” The darker pink shapes represent the petals of the lilies.

Positive Space

For my positive space drawing, I chose a bloomed flower and a bud. I made sure to add shading on areas that made sense. For example, I shaded the opened flowers stem darker because the petals would have to cover more light and also so it would look like it was in-front of the bud. Which is why the bud has a lighter shade on its stem because it’s closed and only the opened flower is slightly covering.

For my negative space drawing, I drew around the edges of each piece instead of focusing on what was within. Then I colored the background to mainly focus the shape of each element. In some cases however, the leaves and stems are connected by a line.

For this assignment, I focused on making sure shading was almost identical to the image provided. I focused on keeping my lighter shades the same until I needed to add more shading. There were darker shades on the right side of the sphere and on the table’s surface near the circle to create dimensions.

For my cross-hatching drawing, I went back and forth using different directions of lines. Since there was more darker shading underneath the sphere, I added more lines compared to the sphere itself. Near the darker shading, I kept somewhat the same amount of cross-hatching until I moved upwards, where I started to do less lines.

For my recycled robot, I used simple materials such as toilet paper rolls, a water bottle, water bottle caps and a 7/11 slurpee lid. To keep my robots head in place, I used pins instead of glue. I was also able to attach part of its body with another pin and I cut my toilet paper rolls and slurpee lid with correct measurements to easily attach them together.
