I used to think math was something you were either good at or not. I remember feeling nervous about what kind of math skills would be need to become a successful math teacher. I kept thinking back at how math was taught during my elementary years; the teacher giving a whole lesson on how to find the "correct" solution to the problem.

I used to think that the only way to find a solution was to memorize the equation. I used to think using manipulatives meant I was at a lower level than my peers. I also used to think that math was not something you would need in the real world.

After our wonderful math course, I now know to have a "yet" mentality and know that everyone can become math experts. I learned to keep from saying "I'm not good at math". I know now about the many ways of solving one problem and how to allow students to struggle as they explore with mathematics. I also learned about how math is embedded into all other subjects. I was able to see how much math is used in our daily life.

In addition, I now know that math can be a great opportunity for language development. Our "Talk Moves" is something I look forward to using in my future classroom. Along with the "What do you notice?, What do you wonder?" strategy. I now know that manipulatives are great for all students. I takeaway such great knowledge of the Mathematical Practices and ways to support higher order thinking.
