What do you think is the appropriate age for children to own a cell phone?

Although there are a few advantages to young children owning a phone it doesn't seem like a good idea overall to me. I didn't get a cell phone until Iwas 14 I believe. I think that is a fairly appropriate age. They are handy for contacting parents or for emergencies and also kids who play sports or participate in activities away from home and their parents. That is hard to really decide on but i think age 14-16 is a good age to have a cell phone. teenage stage where more activities will take place.

I think different types of technology, such as an ipad shared between the family, would be great for young kids. But a cell phone is something I would wait on until they entire junior high. It will lead to less embarrassment on their part and less trouble.
