It involves collecting and storing rainwater from rooftops or other surfaces in tanks, ponds, or underground cisterns. This water can then be used for irrigation, drinking, or other household needs during dry periods. It's a very common practice in places like India and parts of Africa.

The UK’s Thames Barrier is an iconic example of building robustness and flexibility in the face of uncertainty. By holding back storm surges and high tides, it helps protect 1.3 million people, £275 billion in property and infrastructure, and places of high historical and cultural value from flooding. When it was opened in 1982, the Thames Barrier had a design life until 2030. However, studies show that based on current sea-level rise projections and the ability to raise embankments, it can now protect London until 2070. Give me history reason and benfit of this

Kenya – Sand Dams In arid regions of Kenya, communities build sand dams across seasonal rivers. These dams trap water in sand during rainy seasons, which can then be accessed slowly during droughts, helping people adapt to erratic rainfall.

Rwanda controlled plastic primarily through a phased legal approach, banning plastic carrier bags in 2008 and extending this ban to most single-use plastics in 2019. Key enforcement strategies included public awareness campaigns, strict penalties for violators, custom inspections at borders to prevent smuggling, and a nationwide community service program called Umuganda. The country also promoted eco-friendly alternatives, such as paper and reusable bags, and worked to foster a circular economy to encourage waste recycling and resource recovery.

Raila Jan

Instead of building higher and higher levees, the Netherlands adopted a “Room for the River” strategy, founded on the principles of water safety and spatial quality. The idea is to live with the water instead of fighting it: the strategy gives water more space to spread out when floods occur, reducing damage and loss of life.

The country moved dikes inland, widened rivers, raised bridges, dug flood channels, and added river catchment areas. New parks, public infrastructure, and recreational spaces were also created. Now the Rhine River can safely carry 1,000 cubic meters of water per second more than it could before.

Climate change adaptation examples include agriculture by planting drought-resistant crops and improving water-efficient irrigation, water management with early warning systems for floods and drought, infrastructure improvements like seawalls and resilient buildings, and nature-based solutions such as restoring wetlands and planting trees. Other examples include developing disaster risk reduction plans, enhancing early warning systems, and implementing policies

In the Maldives, one of the world’s lowest-lying nations, climate change adaptation focuses on coping with sea level rise and stronger storm surges. A key example is the creation of Hulhumalé, an artificial island built higher than natural islands to provide safe housing and economic space for the growing population. Alongside this, the Maldives invests in seawalls, coastal defenses, and mangrove restoration to protect existing islands, showing how adaptation can combine engineering with nature-based solution

The single most important adaptation strategy is building resilient infrastructure to withstand climate impacts like flooding, extreme heat, and sea-level rise. This includes designing flood defenses (e.g., seawalls, levees), retrofitting buildings with climate-resilient materials, and upgrading transportation systems to remain operational during extreme events. For example, the Netherlands' advanced flood control systems, including dikes and storm surge barriers, are a global model for protecting communities from rising seas ¹ ² ³.
