It was assumed that they had moved (perhaps to the island of Croatoan), that they had integrated with the Croatian tribe, that the Spanish had attacked them and destroyed the settlement ... And then of course there were the myths and stories of ghosts, many centered on Virginia Dare. In her case, legend has it that she grew up among the Indians, and that a love dispute between two of them transformed her into a white deer, whose ghost can still be seen in the place where the Roanoke fort was located.

But I think the most probable thing was that the first settlers of that place (the Indians) did not let anyone pass and when the resources of that place were exhausted, they all died, so they did not find any true testimony.

One hotly debated clue is a rock, supposedly carved by Roanoke settlers, that was found in a swamp in North Carolina. I'm not sure but it could be that two of the original settlers, Virginia and Ananias Dare, were killed. For decades, the rock has been repeatedly authenticated and debunked by archaeologists and historians. However, one popular theory held that the Roanoke settlers were killed by nearby Indian tribes.

In the late 1500s, the English made their first attempts to settle in North America on Roanoke Island, which is off the coast of North Carolina. These first settlers ended up returning to England because of a shortage of food and Indian attacks.
In 1587, a second colony was founded on Roanoke. It was then that Virginia Dare, the first baby born to English parents in North America, was born. John White, the leader of the colony, went to England to get more supplies. When he returned in 1590, the settlement was deserted. All the settlers had mysteriously disappeared. The only clue he found was the word "Croatoan" carved in a tree. To this day no one knows what happened to them. It's possible that the Colonists joined with the friendly Croatoan natives. Or were they massacred by the unfriendly Wanchese tribe? No one knows for sure.

He relates that between 1584 and 1587 three different English expeditions arrived on the island but only two returned, the third stayed and he never returned.
Theories about the disappearance have ranged from an annihilating disease to a violent rampage by local Native American tribes. Previous digs have turned up some information and artifacts from the original colonists but very little about what happened to them.

Thanks to technological advances and a cover-up on a map, researchers are getting closer to finding out what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke Island.

On the other hand, remains of British activity were also found at the same distance, to the northwest, on the mainland.
