Getting help in person or over the phone often takes hours, and support is usually only available during regular working hours. This means many people have to sacrifice time or even take a day off just to get the assistance they need. When most of these services where digitized and put online, their ambiguity and difficulty of use followed them (with buggy pure HTML websites and many hyperlinks that links to the same page). The same mistake should not happen in migrating these services in ai. Our application removes that barrier by giving you access to the same support anytime and anywhere, whether you’re at home, getting ready for bed, or even on a quick break. It’s help that fits your schedule, not the other way around.

In Canada, recent immigrants with foreign degrees are nearly 2.5 times more likely to work in jobs that require only a high school diploma or less, compared to Canadian-born degree holders (25.8% vs 10.6%) (Source - 1). Despite high education: university-educated immigrants accounted for 71% of growth in low and medium skilled employment between 2001-2016, but only 29% of growth in high-skilled jobs (Source - 2). Furthermore, for the students transferring here into Canada, many have their foreign credentials assessed: among 40,442 immigrants with credentials assessed, 56% were fully accepted, 19% partially, 15% in process, and 11% rejected (Source - 4).

These gaps affect thousands of immigrants year after year, leading to underemployment, lost income, wasted investment in education, unneeded costs, and delayed integration. An important reason is that there is no orderly, clear, user-friendly way for newcomers or transfer students to learn which foreign qualifications/courses are accepted in Canada, what is required for equivalency, or what additional certifications/licensing are needed. Without this direction, they often find themselves in positions far beneath their schooling, even missing out on tens of thousands of dollars each year.

In order to tackle this problem, we plan to create a website which incorporates AI elements and machine learning to provide the necessary information to its users. Users will have the option to upload their resumes, certifications, and/ or transcripts, which will be fed to the AI. The AI will then process this information and guide the user through the equivalencies found in Canada, any further certifications that may be required, and the future of this career path. Should the users also require, translation to their preferred language will also be provided by means of AI-assisted translation. As we're working on this project, we also plan to gain user feedback through surveys and other tools and improve our product as needed.

The immigrants that are in need of our solution are those in the workplace, as 41% of working immigrants deal with a lot of stress as a result of not being able to adjust to Canadian workplace culture, instances of micro-aggressions and language barriers. In order to tackle this issue, we are developing a product that can provide the user with local therapists and services given information such as the user's location, ethnicity, age range, and salary. This gives immigrants an opportunity to have access to different therapists in their area to relieve some of their stress.

Immigrants don't feel they have community when they come here as most are introverts. Coming to a new country, they feel like they are not welcome as everyone already has their group and people that they can talk too or hang around with. They need something to push them/motivate them to go out and explore their new country (which would be Canada)

Solution

The solution is to build an app (Inspired by Pokemon GO) where the newcomers go out and go to these 'pit stops' or 'challenge' areas and collect stars by visiting landmarks, going to the gym, libraries, attending workshops or school sessions. There will be sections for each person (Ex: Student, new moms/dads, introverted tasks, etc..)

Navigating Canada’s legal and immigration system shouldn’t require a law degree - or perfect English. Both Canadian immigrants and citizens may find it confusing and overwhelming to understand essential documents such as visas, tax forms, and citizenship documents, and they may also be unable to afford the help they need. We understand that this may greatly impact younger immigrants more so than others. These young adults may not have much experience filling in legal documents in their home country. Coming to a new country is scary enough as it is, without having to face these struggles along with it. While government websites and resources are made available to help them out with this issue, many tend to be too generic and the legal jargon is often overwhelming, leaving many immigrants lost and many feel hesitant to reach out for help.

That’s where we come in. We’re building a web-based, AI-powered multilingual assistant, LegalEase, that provides personalized, real-time guidance of Canada’s complex legal and administrative documents. Our tool will allow users to submit photos of legal documents, and will help break down legal jargon into plain language. We also aim to break down language barriers by allowing users to request the summary in their native language. By combining these, LegalEase will be tailored to each individual’s personal needs, and will ensure that everyone will be able to successfully complete legal documents.
